If I noticed that I was going through depression, or if someone pointed it out to me, I would first try to acknowledge what I was feeling and seek support rather than ignore it.
This is my story.
Three years ago, I experienced postpartum depression after having my third child. At that time, I was going through a very chaotic and overwhelming period in my life. My GP recognized that I was experiencing depression and explained that postpartum depression can happen to mothers. My doctor recommended that I get enough rest and engage in activities that could help me focus on something positive, rather than immediately relying on medication.
That advice gave me the opportunity to reconnect with my inner child. I remembered how much I loved writing poems and stories when I was younger. When I was in Year 9, I wrote and published my first children's storybook, and my school library even kept a copy of my book.
Twenty-seven years later, I finally found the opportunity to return to something I had loved for so long.
I started writing, drawing, and creating children's stories again. Having something creative to focus on gave me a sense of purpose and helped me work through one of the most difficult periods of my life. It reminded me that there was still a part of me beyond being a mother—the creative person I had always been.
Eventually, this journey led me to publish children's storybooks. Looking back, I believe reconnecting with my creativity played an important role in my recovery.
My experience taught me that when we are struggling with depression, it is important to acknowledge what we are feeling and seek support. Talking to someone we trust, seeking professional help, getting enough rest, and finding healthy activities that bring us joy can all be valuable steps.
For me, writing and drawing became more than just hobbies. They became a way to reconnect with myself, rediscover my passion, and awaken the creative child within me.
Sometimes, healing can begin when we give ourselves permission to reconnect with the person we were before life became overwhelming.
