As expected, we've had lots of chicks hatch this week and now have over 200 chicks in the colony. This is a busy time for our penguin parents and for the first few weeks of the chicks' lives, the parents will take turns coming and going to feed the chicks.

Pretty soon we are hoping the chicks in the nest cam will hatch, as it has been around 35-36 days since the eggs were laid, which is typical of an incubation period.

Keep an eye on the eggs here at our live stream:

New legislation has just been passed to nearly triple marine protection across the Hauraki Gulf/Tīkapa Moana. That means more than 1,500 square kilometres of new protected areas – including marine reserves, high protection zones, and seafloor protections.

The Gulf is in trouble – years of damage from fishing, pollution and other human activities have caused marine life and habitats to decline.

This Act is fantastic news and a major step to bring the Gulf back to life – helping fish populations bounce back, protecting endangered birds, and supporting the local economy through tourism and recreation.

Whether you fish, boat, dive, or just enjoy the water – these changes are important. They’ll affect where and how you can enjoy the Gulf, and they’re designed to make it better for everyone in the long run.

Find out what’s changing, why it matters, and how it impacts you here: https://bit.ly/3KI2yTn

Yesterday we proudly recognised 44 individuals for their commitment and dedication to protecting New Zealand’s borders, at the second Auckland-based Medals and Long Service Awards held in central Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.

From 14 years to over four decades, each recipient has played a vital role in keeping our borders secure and trade flowing.

As a part of the ceremony, we had two very special award recipients, one receiving their 5th clasp to their medal for 49 years of operational service and another receiving a plaque for 45 years of service.
