🚀 A major milestone for innovation in New Zealand

The Research and Development Tax Incentive (RDTI) has now supported $10 billion of business investment in research and development.

The RDTI is a joint venture between MBIE and Inland Revenue. It helps businesses develop new ideas, products and technologies by providing a 15% tax credit on eligible research and development costs.

This support helps businesses grow, create skilled jobs, and stay competitive.

When businesses invest in innovation, the benefits extend beyond individual companies. It helps build a stronger economy for all New Zealanders.

New technology is being introduced at a notorious Brightwater intersection to help make it safer for everyone using the road.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is installing an intersection speed zone (ISZ) at the State Highway 6 and Ellis Street/River Terrace Road intersection, which will be live from next Thursday, 1 October.

The new system uses electronic signs to temporarily reduce the speed limit on a 350-metre section of SH6 from 80km/h to 60km/h when vehicles are turning into or out of the highway.

When a vehicle approaches SH6 from Ellis Street or River Terrace Road, or a vehicle on SH6 is waiting to turn right into either road, the electronic signs will activate. Drivers must then slow to 60km/h until they pass the sign showing the speed limit has returned to 80km/h.

At other times, the speed limit will remain at 80km/h.

The changes follow consultation late last year, which attracted more than 350 submissions. Around 70% of respondents supported the ISZ, with feedback, technical assessments and safety information helping inform the decision to proceed.

Busy intersections like this can be high-risk, particularly when vehicles are turning onto or crossing a main road. The new system is expected to reduce injury crashes by about 28%, while adding only around one second to journey times.

So, when the signs are active, please slow down and take extra care – it will make a big difference.
