I am really pleased to announce my official selection as the Green candidate for Wellington Central in the General Election this year 💚

We will be running a two ticks Green campaign in Pōneke. That means we’ll be gunning it for the party vote as per, but we will be applying the same amount of passion to get support for me as the candidate as well. I am not standing for the List, so the only way I will become an MP this year is by representing the City I love.

Excited to announce Caity Barlow-Groome as my Campaign Manager. Caitlin managed my local body campaign last year leading us to a historic victory, gaining more first preference votes than the next three candidates combined! Caity knows how to run a mean ground campaign, and we’re bringing back Joe, Andrew and Kate to coordinate our whānau of volunteers.

To my friend, and our co-leader, James Shaw - e mihi ana ki a koe e hoa, thank you so much for all of the ground you have made in our community for me to be able to step up and make the most of this opportunity. You have always had my back and I feel honoured to have your vote of confidence. We are going to smash it in Parliament together and do what needs to be done!

To my wider Green whānau - that’s us this year!

Are you ready to make history?? Join our campaign: https://www.greens.org.nz/tamatha_paul_2023_volunteer

Our Mama is all good! It was a hairy couple of days waiting to hear news from Ruatoria, which is completely cut off still including comms. She lives on the banks of the Waiapu awa and we saw footage of how fast and high the water came up so we were worried.
But finally today with some intermittent connection – whānau in Ruatoria were able to send us this photo and news that she is fine, and thank you Waiapu Civil Defence for letting people know how our loved ones are! So taking a moment to be deeply grateful. We think our mama is probably laughing at us being so worried about her.

Those of us who can breathe out with relief – do so with the utmost heartbreak for all those families who have lost people and livelihoods to the devastation of climate change. It has been heavy and scary to witness such loss and lives being turned upside down and I know we haven’t seen the full extent yet. The basic survival needs of water, kai, shelter and aroha has really given pause to those of us lucky enough to even have that right now. And I know many of you have been and want to spread compassion and help to those who need our assistance. That sense of collective caring will be even more important as we awhi those who need our attention.
I’m also aware that for those who were already struggling, this devastation has a disproportionate impact on them. We need to keep our equity approach strong and ensure our aid and response gets to people and communities who always miss out. Many of us already have more than we need to be more resilient to disasters. But too many were struggling to live dignified lives even before covid, floods and cyclones. The burden on those communities will be tougher than for others - my commitment has always been to highlight those inequities and fight for the solutions to rebalance privilege.
But if politicians and people in power don’t create a fair economic system that looks after people and planet – then humanity HAS to! And right now – we are seeing that humanity come to life in so many beautiful ways. I really do mihi to our rescue and welfare services and community groups and grassroots movements and ordinary folk just feeling in their soul that working together for collective good is the most important thing right now. That motivation to share and care – should remind us what we can and must keep doing. Your elderly loved-one, is my elderly loved-one. We look after who is around us knowing that someone somewhere is worried sick and full of bursting emotion when they hear their person is ok and being cared for.
This is all overwhelming – I know. Our hope is in the beauty of action and manaaki that we are also seeing everywhere. I vote for that.
