The June/July issue of Rural Contractor is out now.

This edition lands right in the middle of Fieldays season, when new machinery is arriving and operators are already thinking ahead to the next upgrade.

We take a close look at the 90hp+ tractor segment and why it has become such a key part of modern farming systems. It is no longer just about horsepower, but how that power is delivered, how efficiently it runs, and how well it fits into long working days across field, loader and transport work.

This issue also features the latest from Fendt, Massey Ferguson, Claas, Case IH, Kubota and JCB, showing how manufacturers are pushing harder on efficiency, comfort and real-world productivity.

With Fieldays underway and input costs still under pressure, the focus this year is firmly on return on investment and doing more with less.

We also include a look at Farmstrong and the pressures facing rural operators through long seasons and tight windows, along with insight from Hon. Mark Patterson on the role of contractors and the realities of capital-heavy farming systems.

It is a solid snapshot of where the sector is right now, and where it is heading next.

The Bogballe M35W fertiliser spreader sits firmly in the category of machines designed to remove guesswork from nutrient application, combining a proven twin-disc spreading platform with an integrated weighing system that constantly monitors and adjusts output. In an era where data-driven farming continues to rise in importance, that level of control is not simply convenient, it is essential.

In modern spraying systems technology often gets framed around electronics, guidance and rate control yet none of those systems can perform accurately without stable hydraulic delivery behind them. The pump remains the core mechanical component of any sprayer and its specifications ultimately dictate flow consistency, agitation performance and spray accuracy.

As herbicide costs climb and resistance pressures increase, many New Zealand growers are revisiting mechanical w**d control - not as a step backwards but as a smarter, more flexible way forward. The LEMKEN Thulit w**d harrow is a good example of how modern engineering has reshaped a traditional concept into a precise, crop-friendly tool suited to today’s farming systems.

For much of the past century, fertiliser strategy in New Zealand has been dominated by what goes on the soil rather than what goes on the plant. Granular nitrogen, spreaders and aerial topdressing have shaped the rhythm of pasture management, and for good reason. They have delivered scale, simplicity and predictable results across diverse farming systems.

Yet as environmental pressure increases and seasonal conditions become less predictable, farmers and contractors alike are starting to look more closely at how efficiently nutrients are actually being used once they are applied. That shift in thinking is one of the reasons foliar fertilisers are attracting renewed attention, and it sits at the heart of the approach taken by Progro.

Kevin Beatty from Molong in Central West New South Wales says smaller livestock and crop producers can get ahead when they have the right mindset and the right gear.

Kevin farms crops and raises sheep and cattle on a total of about 300 acres, with 60 acres of his own land and the remainder made up of a number of properties around Molong that he leases.

Fertiliser technology is increasingly moving toward precision delivery rather than simple bulk spreading. Liquid and suspension systems are gaining traction because they allow nutrients, biologicals and trace elements to be applied more accurately and at lower rates, improving efficiency while reducing waste.

The Tow and Fert Multi 4000 sits firmly within that transition, built as a high-capacity liquid fertiliser system designed to combine mixing, transport and application into one integrated machine.

There are sprayers and there is Bateman. Farmers and contractors across the globe rely upon British-made Bateman self-propelled sprayers.

Bateman is a family-run company, it produces all four models of its range entirely in-house at its plant in Devon.

Every detail of a Bateman sprayer is designed around the operator. The design is driven by the need for simplicity to give effortless, efficient spraying during long hours in the field.
