Auckland Council has approved resource consent for a proposed Hindu temple in South Auckland despite local opposition. The application for Shri Venkateshwara Temple on a 4.5-hectare site at 378 Ararimu Rd, Ramarama, was submitted in October last year, with a public hearing held in early June. Of the 203 submissions received, 155 supported the project, 47 opposed it, and one was neutral. Indra Sirigiri, chairperson of the Sirigiri Trust, welcomed the decision, stating, "Every concern raised by council officials and local residents was met with diligence and humility." Sirigiri added, "The trust remains fully committed to complying with all conditions laid out in the consent and aims to ensure the development complements Ramarama’s character and natural environment." Opposition focused on traffic management issues, dangerous access roads, the temple’s suitability in a rural setting, aesthetic impacts, rural ambience deterioration, and stormwater flooding concerns.

Remote’s Global Life-Work Balance Index 2025 reveals the countries setting the gold standard. New Zealand leads the world once again, taking the #1 spot for the third year in a row, thanks to generous leave policies, full-paid parental leave, and rising wages.

The Government has just announced proposed new measures to crack down on shoplifting, aiming to deter low-level theft and protect businesses.

Key changes include:

- On-the-spot fines of up to $1000 for low-level theft!
- Increased maximum prison sentences for higher-value theft (up to 7 years for goods over $2000).
- A new "aggravated theft" offence for goods under $2000 stolen in an offensive or threatening manner.

Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith stated, "Our Government will not sit by while shoplifters rob businesses of their livelihoods." The new infringement regime is designed for a "quick ticket" instead of court.
