The name for the new South Dunedin Library and Community Complex currently under construction has been revealed: Te Whata o Kaituna! 🛖🫶
The name, recommended and gifted by Te Rūnanga o Ōtākou, draws on the rich culture and history of the South Dunedin area and symbolises community resourcefulness. 🤝
Kaituna is the traditional name for South Dunedin, and whata is a structure traditionally used for the storage of resources and kai, and symbolises how a library is a resource of knowledge and feeds the minds of the community. Tuna (eel) were an important food source for Kāi Tahu and integral to the tribal community, hence it being a part of the name and a key theme in the building design. 🏢
When complete, Te Whata o Kaituna will feature a modern and accessible library and DCC service centre, as well as meeting rooms, creative spaces, and a recording studio. 📚🎨🎤
Adopting Te Whata o Kaituna as the name demonstrates the DCC’s application of Te Taki Haruru and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. 🥰
