📢 Official Update: OCR Held at 2.25%

The Committee has agreed to keep the Official Cash Rate (OCR) steady at 2.25%.

They highlighted that while the economic recovery is underway, it’s still in its early stages. A premature increase in interest rates could slow this recovery and cause inflation to fall below target. At the same time, keeping rates too low for too long could push inflation above the target midpoint.

To support sustained economic growth, the Committee agreed that monetary policy will remain accommodative for some time. They also noted risks such as cautious household spending, tighter financial conditions, and global uncertainties that could affect the domestic economy.

✅ Key points:

Significant excess capacity, modest wage growth, and stable core inflation support inflation returning to target.

Inflation expectations remain somewhat elevated, so careful monitoring continues.

If economic activity picks up as expected, gradual normalisation of policy may begin without disrupting recovery.

The Committee will continue to assess new data and ensure monetary policy supports a steady return to target inflation.

How the healtcare system can be improved?

🏨 1. Strengthen Primary Care (GP System)

Right now, hospitals are overloaded because people can’t access GPs easily.

Improvements:

Increase funding for community clinics.

Incentivise doctors to work in rural areas.

Expand nurse practitioners and pharmacists’ prescribing powers.

The restructuring under Health New Zealand aimed to centralise services, but primary care still needs stronger local investment.

👉 When primary care works well, hospital waitlists drop.

⏳ 2. Reduce Surgery & Specialist Wait Times
Options:

Contract private hospitals to clear public waitlists.

Extend operating hours (evenings/weekends).

Better digital referral triage systems.

👉 Delays are costing productivity and worsening health outcomes.

New Zealand is a strong and stable country, but there are some serious real-life issues many people feel every day. Here are the key areas the government should focus on:

🏠 1. Housing Affordability & Cost of Living

House prices and rents remain high in cities like Auckland and Wellington.

Many young families can’t afford to buy homes.

Groceries, fuel, insurance, and rates have all increased significantly.

Why it matters: People are struggling to save, and more families are under financial stress.

🏥 2. Healthcare System Pressure

Long wait times for surgeries and specialist appointments.

Shortage of nurses, doctors, and GPs.

Mental health services are stretched.

The restructuring of Health New Zealand has not yet solved workforce shortages.

Why it matters: Delays in care affect quality of life and can become life-threatening.

💰 3. Economic Growth & Productivity

Slow productivity growth compared to similar developed countries.

Businesses facing high compliance costs and labour shortages.

Brain drain — skilled workers moving to Australia for better pay.

Why it matters: Without stronger economic growth, wages won’t rise sustainably.

🎓 4. Education Challenges

Declining literacy and numeracy results.

Teacher shortages.

Debate over curriculum reforms.

Why it matters: Education directly affects future workforce quality and social mobility.

🧠 5. Mental Health & Youth Wellbeing

Rising anxiety and depression rates among young people.

High youth su***de rates compared to OECD averages.

Why it matters: Long-term social and economic costs if not addressed early.

🚓 6. Crime & Public Safety

Increased retail crime and gang-related violence in some areas.

Public concern about youth offending.

Why it matters: Public confidence in safety impacts communities and businesses.

🌱 7. Climate Change & Infrastructure

Flooding and extreme weather events impacting regions like Hawke's Bay.

Need for resilient infrastructure and better disaster planning.

Balancing agriculture emissions with economic stability.

Why it matters: Climate events are already costing billions in damage.

🤝 8. Treaty & Social Cohesion Debates

Ongoing discussions around co-governance and Treaty interpretation related to the Treaty of Waitangi.

Public debate about national identity and equality.

Why it matters: Social unity is critical for long-term stability

📊 What’s Driving Gold Prices
🌍 Global Market Forces
Gold continues to attract buyers as investors seek safety amid economic and geopolitical pressures. Prices have been boosted by:

Global financial market uncertainty, encouraging store-of-value buying,

Currency movements, including swings in USD and NZD exchange rates,

Ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting commodities broadly.

These factors have pushed gold to historically high levels in recent months, with record price spikes noted earlier in 2026 before some correction.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Kiwi Consumers Respond
Local jewellers and bullion dealers report continued strong demand. Traders say customers are both buying gold as a long-term investment and selling jewellery or bullion to cash in on high prices. In Wellington, one dealer noted unusually high order volumes even outside the typical busy season.
