The 3 biggest lessons I’ve learnt as someone who has spent 20+ years of their life battling the taniwha (monster) of addictions.

Tuatahi - There is whakapapa (genealogical ties) to everything we do. Although I thought I was doing things for “fun”. There were soo many layers of pain I was avoiding and suppressing.

Tuarua - Blaming others and “societal norms” is not justification for my actions. Just because the consumption of alcohol and substances was perceived as normal, that did not make it okay.

Tuawha - In order to heal it, I need to feel it. All of my addictions were just a means to fill the internal void within me .

But, once I started revealing the whakapapa of my addictions, sitting and feeling all the things I had been suppressing. I was able to transmute the pain into power and free myself of the shackles of this taniwha.

At the end of the day, only I had the power to make that change and only I was choosing to remain a slave to the taniwha of addictions.

For too long the taniwha (monster) of mahi tūkino (s3xual harm) has been swept under the rug.

And the worst part about this taniwha is that majority of survivors are being hurt by those who are supposed to keep them safe.

Where is the safety for survivors who are being silenced and forced to heal in isolation?

Where is the safety when abusers are being protected because of “reputation”?

This sh*t needed to end generations ago. But it can end with us.

What is up everyone,
Another glorious day to be alive 🙌

My name is Maav and I have spent the majority of my life in chaos and te pō (the darkness). However, I have spent the last decade finding peace within myself, rediscovering who tf I am beyond the conditioning of my past, and conquering my own Maunga (mountains) of adversity ⛰️

I am committed to forging a legacy that my whānau (family) can be proud of. And helping others to find peace within themselves, remember their power, and conquer their own Maunga of adversity ⚔️

So, follow along as I continue sharing my own haerenga (journey) of life and embodying the best version of me I can be ✌️

We all face many Maunga (mountains) of adversity throughout our lives.

Some may seem easily conquerable.

While others may seem overwhelmingly insurmountable.

Regardless of the case, only WE have the power to CHOOSE to overcome those Maunga. Or whether WE CHOOSE to allow those Maunga to overcome us.

My name is Mav, and I whakapapa to the East Coast and the top of the North Island. I currently stay in Opōtiki and work as a rangatahi therapist. I am also a Pou within a healing and developmental space for all walks of life.

‼️Te wānanga tuatahi o The Generation ‼️

Although this was only our first wānanga of many, many laughs were heard, many connections were made, many intentions were exceeded, and many layers were unveiled 🙌

I am beyond grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of another awesome kaupapa from the brother and Te Whare o The Generation 🙏

Also, it was an honor and a privilege to share space w the brothers and I can't wait to continue to see everyone prosper in all their aspirations and endeavors 🫡

According to Tewaioratanga's maramataka guide sheet adapted from Living by the Moon Te Maramataka A Te Whānau-ā-Apanui by Wiremu Tawhai, (2013), the current lunar phase is Ariroa.

Ariroa is said to be a time of low and unproductive energy and is an ideal time to be still and reflect. It is also recommended to utilize this time to Kia tūpato (be cautious) not to become complacent by finding alternative ways to keep learning and progressing.

Tamatea tūhāhā is said to be a time of low and unpredictable energy and an ideal time for mahi māra but be cautious and take notice. It is also recommended to utilize this time to expand your kete of knowledge and to give back.
