Fatbergs Wash Ashore at Tāhunanui Back Beach After Nelson Flooding 🌊
Pet owners in Nelson are being issued an urgent warning after reports of dogs eating solidified sewage waste, known as fatbergs, which have washed up on local beaches.
The Nelson City Council confirmed via social media that recent heavy flooding in the region caused these masses to be flushed out of the sewer system and onto the shore, particularly at Tāhunanui Back Beach.
What You Need to Know:
The Risk: Fatbergs are highly attractive to dogs due to their smell, but they are composed of congealed fats, oils, and sewage, making them a significant health hazard if ingested. 🐶
Primary Location: Tāhunanui Back Beach, though other local shorelines may be affected.
Cause: Heavy rainfall and flooding overwhelmed sewer systems, dislodging the masses.
What is a "Fatberg"? A fatberg is a rock-like mass of waste that forms in sewer systems. They are created when fats, cooking oils, and grease (FOG) are poured down drains and combine with non-biodegradable items, such as wet wipes and hygiene products.
Advice for Beachgoers:
Keep a close eye on pets and children.
Consider keeping dogs on a lead in affected areas to prevent them from scavenging.
If you suspect your pet has ingested a fatberg, contact your veterinarian immediately.
