My wairua cup was well and truly brimming and on occasions overflowing, only to be refilled with more beautiful kōrero.

Colleen Nicholls is an extraordinary human with such a generous heart, forever sharing with me her gifts in the Arts.

Her weaving is beautiful 🫶🫶🫶

If you’re a self-taught artist, let’s be friends! 🫶

Being self-taught requires a bit of courage in my opinion. Sometimes you don’t really know what you’re doing, but something moves you to create.

I’ve been creating for about 5 years now. Learning as I go. I’ve never been happier pursuing something that is authentically me.

Anyone else relate to this? Having to do something because that’s just who you are! 🫶😊

Portrait of my kuia.

I spent hours with my Nan and didn’t waste any time really, really looking. So, I’d never forget each and every crease, eye flicker, wayward grey eye brow, pesky chin hair and soft whispery hair.

I looked into her eyes for hours, and on a good day she’d let me get close.

The process really was the gift in producing this portrait of my kuia.
Lovingly done in oils.

Painting now lives in London, UK. 🫶

Just making things.

Chocolatey things.🍫

Pretty things. 🌻

I like to make something everyday.

Making things is so good for you. Making things reminds our soul that we have the capacity to create and express who we are in unique and special ways.

Cooking, drawing, painting, baking, card-making are some of the ways I express myself creatively. There are so many ways to be creative though.

How are others expressing their creativity today?

Who relates?

When you go into an art shop for one thing and then you see the bargain bin, new line of art supplies, new series of oil paints, exquisite papers, sparkly things, discounted paint brushes🤣

Oh it’s a problem 🤦🏽‍♀️🙄🤣

I always loved art in all its forms. Waiata, haka, visual, performance, writing. I love it all.

The vibration or wairua is a direct portal to part of me that intellectual pursuits cannot. In some respects, art can put my curious brain on standby and that’s a pleasant break from the business of the brain.

Art can transport us back to our people and our stories and keep the memory of those we love alive.

This is an old digital portrait of my koroua, Netana Hohaia Boynton.

I believe there’s potential to accelerate growth by exposing your work (despite any fear to do so). Why isolate yourself with your art and only stretch to your own known capacity?

Eyes on mean judgements and that’s not always a bad thing!

So, not ever having shared any writing not intended for public consumption, here goes 🤞🏽🤣

Just ponderings / not proofed, just raw.

Shelley, I got brave 🫶

It’s Rākaunui.

Could this be the reason I want nothing but you tonight? To shed this awkward shell of being and let my soul dance naked in your etheral glow?

Oh how you beckon me so.
With words of colour and minute speckled strokes.

You’re the lover I’ve never had. You tickle my insides and invite me to dance.

And I get to choose the dance?

And one of my making?

So I choose to write. That will be how I will dance. I’ll sculpture my words to an ancient beat and with a contemporary rhythm. I’ll contort my thoughts and extend the limbs of my experience.

And when you go, I’ll return to toiling my errands and pick up my pen on the next Rākaunui moon.

What are you working on my fellow artists?

Not finished, work in progress. ✌️
