Your host might ask about dietary needs — but if they forget, that’s on you to bring it up 😅

12 years of hosting has taught me this isn’t the host’s job to guess. If you’re a guest with an allergy, dietary restriction, or you’re bringing someone new (parents, in-laws, kids), speak up before the food hits the table — not after.

When my mother-in-law used to visit, I always gave the host a heads-up in advance that she couldn’t have anything tomato-based because of her treatment. It wasn’t their job to guess — it was mine to say it.

Ep 3 of The Guest Code — my series on hosting and guest etiquette, one episode at a time.

Save this for your next invite, and tag someone who needs to hear it.

If you haven’t done this in Welly... you haven’t really seen Welly.

The Wellington Cable Car has been running since 1902 — originally built to get locals from Kelburn into the city, now it’s the last historic funicular left in Aotearoa New Zealand and one of only three major public funiculars in Oceania.

The ride itself: 609 metres of track, climbing to 119m altitude, moving at 4m/sec, and taking just 3-5 minutes through tunnel light displays and past the Kelburn hillside houses. You’re dropped right at the top with easy access to the Botanic Garden ki Paekākā, Zealandia, Space Place, and the Cable Car Museum.

And this is the best time to do it — for the whole month of September, the Botanic Garden and Ōtari-Wilton’s Bush are running a Spring Festival: free events, guided walks, talks, and springtime experiences all included.

With term break coming up, it’s the perfect one to do with the kids. Every Sunday from 3pm until close, now through 18 October 2026, rides are $3 one-way or $6 return for adults and children. Tickets available online or at the ticket box from 3pm.

Pro tip: take the kids to Space Place at the top and make it a complete half-day tour.

Save this and share it with someone you wanna ride together. ♥️

Day 2 of sharing my must-try NZ cafes 🇳🇿

This one comes with a royal stamp of approval - Harry and Meghan stopped by when they visited NZ, and honestly? I get it. Beachfront views, plane spotting while you wait (worth every minute), and chili eggs that don’t miss.

📍 Maranui Café, Wellington.

That serving dish you’re about to gift/ re-gift? It might just add to the hostess’s unwanted pile/ end up eating dust in the storage room or regifted to someone else 😅

After 12 years of hosting, I’ve learned exactly which hostess gift ideas actually get used — and which ones just get passed along to the next party. Sometimes they complete the whole circle and return to their first gifting party. If you’re someone who’s just trying to be a better guest at your next dinner party, this one’s for you.

The rule is simple: ask your host if they want you to bring something. If they say no, and you really want to bring something — bring something consumable or useful instead of decorative. It’s not about spending more, it’s about spending smarter. Your host is giving their time, energy, and money to host you — the least you can do is give them a thought.

This is Ep 2 of **The Guest Code** — my series on ‘how to be a guest that people would like to invite back’, one episode at a time.

Save this for your next invite, and tag someone who needs a gift refresh 😅

So I baked the kababs. By the way, I ain’t going back to shaping them any other way.

This one’s a low-carb, high-protein dinner that comes together with barely any effort - perfect for those “not in the mood to cook” nights.

Swap beef mince for chicken mince to make it even leaner.

Save this recipe before it disappears.

• Black pepper crushed 1.5 tsp
• Bread crumbs 5 tbsp
• Coriander leaves (optional)
