It was a sad farewell at the end of April for the horse trials at Riverdale in Ngongotaha; with the land that hosted much of the cross-country course earmarked for housing development, Eventing Bay of Plenty is shifting its base to Te Teko. The Pub Charity CCN3* was a very comfortable all-the-way win for Christen Lane and Bellhaven Cumbria, adding nothing to their 72.87% dressage score over the jumping phases. See our June issue for more coverage.

Staged annually at the 3DE, the 2024 NZ Warmblood Association Young Event Horse Championship attracted a quality entry of 23 four-and five-year-olds to showcase their suitability as potential eventing horses.
The competition comprises four phases, dressage, jumping (both show jumping and cross-country fences), gallop and conformation, with a judge for each, after which the top five combinations are called back for final judging by the combined panel. Starting with a clean slate, a brief showing on the flat is followed by a reduced number of jumps.
The title of NZ Young Event Horse champion and the Mary Bowling Trophy went to Benny MSNZ, owned jointly by Ashleigh McKinstry and Holly Rose. Benny is a 154cm five-year-old gelding by Bentley Van De Heffinck, out of Nesha (Salute the Stars), bred by Bini Newsom. See our June issue for more coverage.

Mia Gilbert and Schnapps MH (Stolzenberg x Grosvenor) were the winners of the NRM CCI3* Piccadilly Trophy, and the NZPCA award for the best-performed pony club rider at the NZ National Three-day Eventing Champs.
Mia is another young rider with a meteoric rise in the sport; she’s just 17 and has just the one horse, and two years ago was nervously tackling her first three-day event at 1.05m level. With much success at one-star over the 2022-23 season, she and Schnapps moved up to two-star with eight starts for eight top-five placings before tackling three-star this season, including being part of the victorious Young Rider team at HOY.

Going from 95cm to four-star in just four years is a remarkable achievement for any rider. And to not just step up to Advanced, but to then win a CCI4*-L in your first season at that level, is simply outstanding!
