The search for missing 75-year-old Roy Arbon has moved into a review phase after 10 days of intensive searching, after he left for a walk and did not return.

Mr Arbon left on 23 July, leaving a handwritten note, and his concerned neighbour reported him missing the following day.

Since that time, Police and Search and Rescue teams – aided by a host of volunteers and specialist crews – have been relentless in their mission to find Roy.

About 1700 search hours have been carried out, with three qualified Search and Rescue managers running the operation.

However, much to their disappointment, he is yet to be found.

Senior Sergeant Mark Kirkwood says a large push was made on Saturday 1 August, deploying every available resource that could be mustered into the area.

“Seventy-nine people deployed out into the Mt Davy area where his phone last pinged, which is notoriously difficult terrain.

“It’s riddled with mineshafts, cliffs, steep drop-offs, trenches, and West Coast bush.

“On Saturday we deployed Police, Land Search and Rescue, Cave Search and Rescue, Mines Rescue, Alpine Cliff Rescue, Fire and Emergency New Zealand, Coastguard, Surf Lifesaving New Zealand, and search dogs. Over the search we have used drones, helicopters, Recco detecting equipment, thermal imaging, any technology that was available to us.”

Police had received numerous calls from the public, many of which led to further points of interest. Any viable leads have been followed up, says Senior Sergeant Kirkwood.

“Tomorrow we intend to send in a dog team and searchers to a further area of interest that we have identified, and we continue to assess any new information received that might lead to Roy’s location.

“It’s very disappointing not to have found Roy to date, and we know how gutting it is, not just for his family, but the wider community.”

Senior Sergeant Kirkwood says searchers are grateful for the way the public has rallied around them.

“We’ve received so many offers of help. On Saturday, for example, coffee cart business MASH bus catering went to the staging area and fed people and provided coffees for free – awesome stuff.

“To anyone who has come out and helped us search, brought supplies, or sent messages of support, thank you.”

The search will be reviewed locally prior to being independently reviewed.

Any information regarding Roy or his whereabouts should be reported via our 105 service, referencing file number 250725/2139.

BOG 2025 semi-final showdowns confirmed

The semi-final fixtures for the 2025 Extra Battle of the Giants tournament have been confirmed, following the conclusion of the group stage at Subrail Park in Labasa in Labasa.

Host side Extra Supermarket Labasa FC, who topped Group A, will face Group B runners-up River Tubing Fiji / Classic Tours & Rentals Navua FC in the first semi-final at 2pm this Saturday.

Navua secured their spot after edging out the competition for the third semi-final slot, taking advantage of Suva FC’s failure to score the required five goals against Rewa in their final group game.

In the second semi-final at 4pm, Group B winners Lincoln Rewa FC will take on Paradise Seafood Supplies Lautoka FC, who finished as runners-up in Group A.

Lautoka’s goalless draw with Labasa in the final group match proved just enough to deny Ba FC a place in the semis and confirm their own progression to the final four.

The stage is now set for two exciting clashes as the four remaining teams battle for a place in the 2025 BOG final.

Group Stage Drama Unfolds: Labasa and Rewa Secure Semi-Final Spots

The 2025 edition of the Extra Battle of the Giants tournament has exploded into life with thrilling encounters, passionate displays, and decisive moments. Two days into group play, Labasa FC and Rewa FC have already sealed their places in the semi-finals, while five other teams are battling for the remaining spots.

Extra Supermarket Labasa FC, led by coach Alvin Chand, have emerged as the first semi-finalists from Group A following two clinical wins. The Babasiga Lions edged Ba FC 1-0 in a gritty affair before asserting dominance with a 2-0 triumph over Nadroga FC.

Their defense has been resolute, and their attack efficient, leaving them with a perfect 6 points and a +3 goal difference.

Paradise Seafood Supplies Lautoka FC began their campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Nadroga and salvaged a nil all against Ba.

The Blues currently sit second in the group with 4 points.
They need just a draw in their final game against Labasa to guarantee qualification.

A Lautoka win would see them top the group; a loss opens the door for Ba.

Ba FC has just 1 point from their two matches and now need a convincing win over Nadroga — ideally by two or more goals — while hoping Labasa defeat Lautoka. Qualification hinges on goal difference if all three teams finish on 4 points.

With two losses, Nadroga FC is out of the semi-final picture but will aim to end their campaign on a high note.

Lincoln Rewa FC have cruised through Group B, justifying their status as pre-tournament favorites. Their journey began with a confident 2-0 win over Navua FC, followed by a commanding 3-0 shutout against Nadi FC. With 6 points and a +5-goal difference, the Delta Tigers are already through to the final four.

Despite an early setback, Navua bounced back with a thumping 3-0 win over Suva. They sit second in the group with 3 points and a +1-goal difference, needing just a draw against Nadi FC to secure progression.

Nadi FC, with just 1 point, must beat Navua to keep their hopes alive. Any result short of victory eliminates them.

Meanwhile, Suva FC also has 1 point but a ---3-goal difference. To qualify, they must beat group leaders Rewa and hope Nadi win narrowly, setting up a potential three-way tie resolved by goal difference.

Final Group Stage Match Schedules
10:00 AM Nadi FC vs Navua FC Group B
12:00 PM Nadroga FC vs Ba FC Group A
2:00 PM Suva FC vs Rewa FC Group B
4:00 PM Lautoka FC vs Labasa FC Group A
