STORY: Hello everyone! My name is Paula, I was born in the beautiful city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, but after living in several places around the world, we decide, with Lucas, my partner, to settle in the beautiful city of Queenstown in New Zealand. I started creating crochet dolls in the year 2015 after I found an Amigurumis magazine while I was working. I had no idea that there was such a thing so I started digging and searching more and more information about this amazing world. I fall completely in love at first sight with this craft. Everything started as a way of giving life to all these creatures that live in my head, but soon after, my friends began to ask me for dolls, for them and to give to others, and so Onpoki was born...with the mission to return to the old days, where all the toys were made by hand, with love and feelings and not in a cold mass production without life.

Helloooo 💚... I finally finished my new website 🎉www.onpoki.com 🎉 and I still can’t believe it. It took me so much longer than I expected... every time I thought I was close to launching it I discovered a whole new list of things that needed fixing, installing, testing or relearning. It was intense, but I learned a lot and now it feels truly complete, so much more whole than the previous one.

Now that it is ready I can go back to what I love the most... creating and sharing new things with you. To celebrate, all patterns are 40% off for a few days.

If you visited my site a few days ago you may have found a vomit inducing amount of ads in the free patterns section. So sorry for that. The first day AdSense accepted me it looked acceptable to me... then I checked again and oh no... it was a visual nightmare. Ads popping from everywhere, impossible to read anything without being hit by another box. And yes, I hope the ads may help with yarn costs in some moment... but even I couldn’t handle that mess.

Everything should look much better now. If you saw it before... sorry and thank you for your patience. Pure embarrassment 🙈.

Holaaaa 💚... por fin terminé mi sitio nuevo 🎉 www.onpoki.com 🎉 y todavía no lo puedo creer. Me llevó muchísimo más tiempo del que imaginaba... cada vez que sentía que estaba por lanzarlo aparecía otra lista entera de cosas para arreglar, instalar, revisar y volver a aprender. Fue intenso, aprendí un montón y ahora se siente realmente completo, muchísimo más entero que el anterior.

Y ahora que está listo puedo volver a lo que más disfruto... crear y compartir cosas nuevas con ustedes. Para celebrarlo, todos los patrones están con 40% off por unos días.

Si lo visitaron hace unos días capaz se encontraron con una cantidad vomitante de anuncios en la parte de patrones gratuitos. Mil disculpas por eso. El primer día que AdSense me aceptó me pareció aceptable... pero después entré de nuevo y ay no... era un in****no visual. Anuncios saltando desde todos lados, imposible leer sin que te tiren otra ventana en la cara. Y está bien que espero que los ads me ayuden a cubrir las lanas en algun momento... pero así no lo soportaba ni yo.

Ya acomodé todo y debería verse muchísimo mejor ahora. Si lo vieron antes... perdón y gracias por la paciencia. Qué vergüenza 🙈.

Pueden pasar por el sitio cuando quieran, ya está todo funcionando lindo y pronto vienen cositas nuevas.

A few days ago it was my partner’s birthday and I made this little duck for him 🦆. He is a programmer (my partner, not the duck, well, maybe the duck is too), and in that world people use something called rubber duck debugging. It basically means explaining the code out loud to a duck so mistakes become easier to spot.

While making this duck, I realised I could use the same idea for my crochet patterns... read them out loud, explain each step, slow down, and maybe catch more mistakes or hopefully none.

It also reminded me of a post I read a while ago criticising designers who look for testers because it’s considered unpaid work. It made me feel a bit guilty. I always saw tester searches as "yay, a free pattern, a fun project, and helping someone at the same time".

Now I’m unsure whether to look for testers again or just trust a very patient duck. What do you think about this?

Hace unos días fue el cumpleaños de mi pareja y le hice este patito 🦆. Él es programador (mí pareja, no el pato, bueno, quizás también el pato, quien sabe) y en ese mundo se usa algo llamado Depuración con patito de goma. Básicamente es explicar el código en voz alta a un patito para que los errores se vean más fácil.

Mientras hacía este patito, me di cuenta de que yo también podría usar la idea para mis patrones... leérselos, explicar cada paso, bajar un poco la velocidad y quizá encontrar más errores o con suerte ninguno.

También me acordé de un post que leí hace un tiempo criticando a quienes buscan testers porque sería trabajo no remunerado. Ese post me hizo sentir medio culpable. Yo siempre vi las búsquedas de testers como un "yay, patrón gratis, proyecto divertido y de paso ayudar".

Ahora no sé si volver a buscar testers o confiar en un patito muy buen escuchador. ¿Qué piensan ustedes sobre este tema?

So happy to see my cotton dishcloths at ❤️This lovely shop in Gisborne is full of earth-friendly & ethically made treasures… and now my cloths are part of it!

Making them was actually a fun challenge… finding the balance between price, quality and time was trickier than I thought. But hey, totally worth it.

I really admire people who can style photos by arranging lots of elements to make them look beautiful. Even though I worked for many years as a photographer, product photography was never my thing 😅… that’s why my photos are usually pretty “minimalistic”, let’s call it 😂.

Estoy tan feliz de ver mis trapos de algodón en ❤️ Esta tienda hermosa en Gisborne está llena de tesoros amigables con el planeta y hechos de manera ética… ¡y ahora mis trapos también son parte de eso!

Hacerlos fue un desafío divertido… encontrar el equilibrio entre precio, calidad y tiempo fue más difícil de lo que pensé. Pero sí, valió totalmente la pena.

Admiro mucho a las personas que pueden estilizar fotos organizando muchos elementos para que se vean bonitas. Aunque trabajé muchos años como fotógrafa, la foto de producto nunca fue lo mío 😅… por eso mis fotos suelen ser bastante “minimalistas”, digámosle 😂.

Disclosure: I don’t usually wear the things I make for clients, but this one was a very special birthday gift for a dear friend who’s just as much of a Pokémon fan as I am (maybe even more). Of course, after finishing it I couldn’t resist trying it on… And now I’ll have to make one for myself, because I can’t live without this silly fish anymore.

And no, even if I give him 200 candies, he’ll never evolve into Gyarados.

I was asked to make 24 dishcloths for a lovely shop in Gisborne that focuses on reusable and eco-friendly products, always with an ethical approach. 🌿✨

What looks simple actually has quite a process behind it: I don’t just crochet each piece, I also “activate” the cotton by soaking it for 12 hours and then block every single one so it’s neat and ready to use. It’s been taking more time than I thought, but I’ve learned so much along the way.

Once my new website is ready, I’d love to share a more technical post about which stitches work best for dishcloths, balancing time, yarn use, price, quality… and other little things I discovered in the process.

For now, I’m just enjoying seeing these 24 dishcloths come to life 💚

Me pidieron hacer 24 dishcloths para un negocio hermoso en Gisborne que se dedica a vender productos reutilizables y ecológicos, siempre con un enfoque amigable con el planeta y hecho de manera ética. 🌿✨

Lo que parece simple en realidad lleva bastante proceso: no solo tejo cada trapo, también “activo” el algodón remojándolo por 12 horas y después bloqueo cada pieza para que quede prolija y lista para usar. Todo eso lleva más tiempo del que imaginaba, pero también me enseñó muchísimo en el camino.

Cuando termine mi nuevo sitio, quiero hacer un post más técnico sobre cuáles son los puntos que mejor funcionan para este tipo de trapos, pensando en rendimiento, cantidad de hilo, precio, calidad… y algunas cositas más que fui aprendiendo en la práctica.

Por ahora sigo tejiendo y disfrutando ver cómo estos 24 dishcloths van tomando forma 💚

Among all the things I’m doing at the same time (Yay me who can’t focus on just one thing 😅), one of the most fascinating is this: mushrooms!
Every time I read or discover something new about them, I get this lovely chill… like there’s something way bigger going on, something we haven’t fully understood yet. They’re magical, curious, and strangely emotional to me.
So I’ve decided to start a small crochet collection inspired by these incredible beings.

I went to the library with my kids (we go there often, it’s one of our happy places) and borrowed all the mushroom books I could find. I also joined the winter reading challenge, so I’m happily busy ❤️📚
The first one I’m designing is the blue pinkgill (Werewere-kōkako in Māori), and my notebook is already full of notes and doodles.
I’d love these mushrooms to keep us company all year round… though autumn still feels like the perfect time to find them on our walks. 🍂

And as I go deeper into this world, I’ll be sharing the most beautiful or surprising things I learn along the way.

Entre todas las cosas que estoy haciendo al mismo tiempo (Yay yo que no puedo concentrarme solo en una cosa 😅), una de las que más me tiene fascinada es esta: ¡los hongos!
Cada vez que leo o descubro algo nuevo sobre ellos, me da un escalofrío lindo… como si fueran parte de algo mucho más grande que todavía no entendemos del todo. Son mágicos, curiosos, y me despiertan una emoción rara pero hermosa.
Así que decidí empezar una pequeña colección tejida inspirada en estos seres increíbles.

Fui a la biblioteca con mis hijos (vamos muy seguido, es uno de nuestros lugares felices) y me traje todos los libros sobre hongos que encontré. También me anoté al desafío de lectura de invierno, así que estoy felizmente ocupada ❤️📚
El primero que estoy diseñando es el blue pinkgill (en maorí: Werewere-kōkako) y ya tengo cuaderno en mano con notas y dibujitos.
Me encantaría que estos honguitos nos acompañen todo el año… aunque otoño sigue siendo el momento perfecto para descubrirlos en nuestros paseos. 🍂

Y mientras vaya avanzando, voy a compartir por acá las cosas más hermosas o sorprendentes que vaya aprendiendo.
