🌪️ The Vortex Story – Episode 11
The Star Beyond the Mist
The seven travellers stood upon the ridge as dawn painted the valley silver.

They had found the Seventh Star.

Or so they thought.

The star glowed within a crystal pendant hanging from an ancient tōtara tree. Its light pulsed gently, like a heartbeat.

"Is this it?" whispered Maia.

Old Koro Vortex shook his head.

"No. The Seventh Star was never the destination."

The wind suddenly changed direction.

The pendant rose into the air.

The star's light stretched across the sky like a shining thread, pointing far beyond the mountains and into a sea of mist no one had noticed before.

A voice drifted through the air:

"Seven stars guide the way. The eighth reveals who you are."

The travellers exchanged nervous glances.

"Eighth star?" asked Wiremu.

"There are only seven."

The pendant spun faster.

The mist began to part.

In the distance, a hidden island emerged from the clouds.

Upon it stood a single tree glowing gold.

And above the tree...

one lonely star.

Brighter than all the others.

The star no map had ever recorded.

The star no one was meant to find.

Until now.

Episode 10 – Wednesday Night Market

It was a freezing Wednesday night, but that certainly didn’t stop people from coming out and enjoying the market. Under a beautiful clear sky, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming despite the chilly temperatures.

At first glance, some people thought the market wasn't very busy, but those who were there knew differently. The evening moved along to its own natural beat, with a steady flow of visitors wandering through the stalls, catching up with friends, grabbing a bite to eat, and enjoying everything the market had to offer.

One of the highlights of the night was welcoming our very first little busker, young Ollie. He brought plenty of smiles and added a special touch to the evening with his enthusiasm and talent. It was wonderful to see people stopping to listen and support him.

We also had some very special visitors roaming the market—our very own Lightning McQueen and Spiderman. They were a huge hit with the kids (and plenty of adults too), creating lots of fun photo opportunities and adding to the lively community spirit that makes our market so unique.

Even on one of the coldest nights we've had, the Wednesday Night Market proved once again that community shines brightest when people come together. Thank you to everyone who rugged up, came along, and helped make Episode 10 another memorable night. We can't wait to see you all again next week.

Episode 9: The Wellness Saturday Market

Another wonderful day of community spirit, good food, and friendly conversation, made even more special by a visit from volunteers from New Zealand's Labour Party.

Their visit was not an official event but a chance to connect with the local community, particularly as some of the volunteers had family living in the area. This gave them a genuine interest in learning about the people, businesses, and activities that make our neighbourhood such a welcoming place.

As visitors arrived throughout the morning, the smell of freshly cooked bacon rolls and hot pancakes quickly became one of the highlights of the day. Families, friends, and market-goers gathered together to enjoy breakfast while chatting with stallholders and exploring the many wellness and community stalls on offer.

The Labour Party volunteers joined in the relaxed atmosphere, sharing stories, meeting local residents, and enjoying the opportunity to connect with people from all walks of life. Their family connections to the area made the conversations especially meaningful, with many discovering shared experiences and local ties.

What stood out most was the strong sense of community that filled the market. People came together not because of politics, but because of a shared appreciation for local connections, good food, and supporting one another.

With plenty of bacon rolls enjoyed, pancakes served with smiles, and conversations flowing throughout the morning, it was another memorable day at the Wellness Saturday Market—a reminder of how important community gatherings are in bringing people together.

Episode 8: The Great Fruit & Veggie Quest
Saturday morning arrived with sunshine peeking through the clouds.

The Vortex Portal suddenly flashed green.

Out rolled dozens of giant magical vegetables.

A talking kumara, a dancing onion, and a pineapple wearing sunglasses bounced across the market.

"Oh no!" cried the kumara. "We've escaped from the Garden Dimension!"

The only way to return them was through a Fruit & Veggie Giveaway.

Families gathered around as fresh produce was shared throughout the morning.

Each fruit and vegetable carried a little bit of Garden Dimension magic.

The dancing onion taught patience.

The pineapple taught kindness.

The kumara taught resilience.

As the final giveaway basket found its new home, the vegetables began glowing.

One by one, they floated back into the portal.

Before disappearing, the kumara turned and said:

"The strongest communities grow just like gardens—together."

The portal slowly closed.

But not before a small note fluttered to the ground.

It read:

"The Vortex will return... and the next adventure involves marshmallows, fairy lights, and a mysterious Winter Night Market."

Episode 6: The Night Market of Many Voices
As winter settled over Tokoroa, the Vortex glowed brighter than ever.

Strings of lights danced above the stalls while laughter drifted through the cool evening air. It was Samoa Language Week, and the market had transformed into a celebration of culture, language, and community.

Children coloured pictures of Sina and the Eel while families wandered between food stalls and local vendors. Samoan songs floated through the market, wrapping everyone in a warm feeling despite the chilly night.

Near the centre of the market stood the mysterious Vortex Portal.

As the clock struck 7pm, the portal shimmered.

Out stepped Sina herself.

She smiled as she watched the children carefully colouring her story.

"Stories live on when people share them," she said.

Before anyone could ask another question, she slipped a shell necklace onto the portal frame and vanished back into the swirling light.

The necklace glowed softly.

The Vortex had another adventure planned.

Episode 7: The Hundred Dollar Challenge
The following week, excitement buzzed through the market.

A giant sign announced:

WIN A $100 FOOD VOUCHER!

People lined up to enter.

The Vortex Portal hummed louder than usual.

Suddenly, a tiny creature wearing a chef's hat tumbled out.

"I'm Vico!" he announced. "Guardian of Good Food!"

Vico explained that the voucher wasn't just a prize—it was a test.

"The winner must spread kindness wherever they shop."

Everyone laughed, but Vico was serious.

Throughout the day, market visitors helped carry bags, shared smiles, and supported local businesses.

When the lucky winner was drawn, a burst of golden sparkles shot from the portal.

Vico nodded approvingly.

"Mission accomplished."

He somersaulted back into the Vortex, leaving behind a gift 🎁 of fruit n veggies.

THE VORTEX — EPISODE 5 - Beneath the sky
Wednesday Night Market 🌙

The wind rolled through the street just before sunset, carrying the smell of sizzling food, fresh coffee, and rain that never quite arrived.

One by one the traders appeared.

Lights flickered on beneath gazebos.
Generators hummed to life.
The coffee cart steamed into action like an old locomotive waking from sleep.

Then… the Vortex opened.

Not everyone could see it.

To most people, the Wednesday Night Market was simply a place to grab dinner, meet friends, and wander the stalls under the evening sky. But those who returned week after week knew something different was happening here.

The market was alive.

Children laughed near the colouring competition cart. Music drifted between the food stalls.Someone said “Spot prizes tonight!” and suddenly people gathered closer.

The new autumn hours gave the night a different feeling now — slower, warmer, almost magical. The glow from the stall lights reflected off smiling faces as people wrapped their hands around hot food and cups of coffee.

Near the centre of the market people watched quietly as the energy built around them. Every conversation, every sale, every laugh fed the strange invisible force that kept the market alive.

Then something unusual happened.

A traveller arrived.

No one knew where he came from. He wandered through the stalls carrying a mysterious wooden crate covered in old travel stickers from forgotten towns. He stopped beside the prize and giveaway cart and smiled.

“You’ve built something special here,” he said.

Before anyone could ask his name, the lights flickered once.

Twice.

As the night carried on, more people arrived. Cars lined the street. Friends called friends. Stallholders sold out of favourites. The market buzzed with an atmosphere.

By closing time, the traders were tired but smiling. Because deep down, they all knew, the Wednesday Night Market was a little weekly favourite with a big heart ❤️

THE VORTEX — EPISODE 4
“THE QUIET SHIFT”

The wind moved differently through Chambers Street this Saturday.

Not loud.
Not chaotic.
Just... different.

The regulars noticed it first.

The market had shifted overnight.

Stalls stood in new places. Pathways opened wider. Conversations travelled further. Something was changing at Tokoroa Market — slowly, quietly — like the town itself was rearranging its heartbeat.

And then came the black cart.

Nobody knew much about it.
No giant signs.
No loud music.
Just the smell of fresh coffee rolling through the cold morning air.

People drifted toward it without meaning to.

“The new cart?” someone whispered.

But the cart owner simply smiled and kept pouring.

Across the market, a travelling swap-meet trader appeared like a character from another timeline — old treasures, random finds, stories attached to every item. Some people stayed for ten minutes. Some stayed for an hour.

And even though the crowd was lighter than usual… the sales were good.

Not rushed.
Not frantic.
Just steady.

Like the market was proving something.

Then came the moment nobody expected.

Boxes of fruit and vegetables appeared near the centre of the market.

FREE.

No catch.
No catchphrase.
Just community.

Parents stopped.
Elders smiled.
Kids carried veggies with Mum & Dad
