SPECIAL ISSUE: HERE AWARDS 2025

Here issue 33 is on sale now.

It's something of a milestone for Here – we celebrated our fifth birthday back in June and this is the fifth time we’ve run these awards.

The past year has been challenging for everyone, but it’s been a brutal year for local media too, so it's all the more worthy of celebration – thank you to our sponsors , and , along with our vehicle partner for making the awards – and this issue – possible.

On the cover: Guy Tarrant's winning project, Sergeant's Cottage – a family home in two 33-square-metre buildings at Worser Bay, Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington. This duo of little buildings has not only introduced a novel way of living in the city but it’s also asked questions of just how much space we need for family life.

Elsewhere: A world of possibility in a tiny Island Bay home by .architects; delightful – and affordable – density in Mount Roskill by ; rethink a corner of a busy carwash site in St Lukes; a wild garden andn ebullient interior by in the Port Hills; a new house by .architecture.design carries memories of a quake-damaged villa in Christchurch; high-performance living on the banks of the Waikato River by

BEST HOUSE AOTEAROA 2025

We're excited to announce the winner of the 2025 Here Awards is Sergeant's Cottage by

A utilitarian 1940s cottage finds new life in this compelling reuse and renovation project, while an identically scaled new building adds just enough extra space. Together, they create a dynamic family home in just 66 square metres. Timber details, painted screens and repurposed rimu sarking add depth and complexity to a very small footprint.

In choosing this year’s Best House Aotearoa, the rōpū kept coming back to Sergeant’s Cottage because while it’s lovely, it also felt provocative. This duo of little buildings has not only introduced a novel way of living in the city but it’s also asked questions of just how much space we need for family life.

Congratulations to Guy and Luke – you have made a beautiful thing.

Here is something to be treasured – a magazine to enjoy and keep. It is a magazine about here – New Zealand, this little country at the bottom of the world. We’re fiercely local and we tell original stories. We’re dedicated to the careful and the considered rather than the showy and the excessive. We’re about colour, joy and fun.

We hope you enjoy it, and we can’t wait to see what you think of it.
