In New Zealand, more than 90% of four-year-olds attend early childhood education—an incredible opportunity to build a strong foundation for literacy before school even begins. But how does this compare globally?
📊 Australia: Around 85.7% of children aged 3–5 are enrolled in preschool, with some states (like Victoria) reaching 93%.
📊 United States: About 69% of 4-year-olds attend preschool, but only 59% of 3–5-year-olds overall are enrolled — and access to state-funded programmes remains limited.
Across these countries—and others—the message is the same: the early years are a critical window to set children up for long-term success in reading and writing.
The research is clear: when children are taught key foundational skills like phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge, and letter-sound links before formal schooling begins, we can dramatically improve outcomes and reduce inequities.
Key Foundations supports early childhood educators to deliver this learning through inclusive, culturally responsive, and play-based activities—aligned with best practice and real-world classroom demands.
No added pressure. Just joyful, evidence-proven early literacy.
