[PLD with Joy Allcock - Auckland] Are you looking for practical, evidence-proven ways to raise writing achievement while strengthening decoding and reading?

Do your students need more support to write confidently, spell independently, and build the foundations they may have missed?

📣 Save the Date – Joy Allcock Returns to Auckland!

For the second year in a row, literacy researcher and author Joy Allcock is coming to Auckland to deliver professional learning that’s transforming writing achievement across Aotearoa.

Code-Ed – Hands On!
The purpose of this PLD day is to explore how to use the Code-Ed resources effectively to raise writing achievement and to support decoding and reading — through hands-on, practical learning you can implement immediately.

Joy will model lessons from:
Key Foundations
The Code Is The Key (Years 1, 2, and 3)
Catch Up Your Code
Sort Out Your Syllables

You’ll experience the lessons as your students do — then collaborate with colleagues to plan how to use these resources to support Tier 1, 2, and 3 instruction across year levels.

While the resources target specific year groups for Tier 1, they can be used flexibly to support learners from Year 1 to Year 8 and beyond.

Joy will also introduce Elevate & Evaluate, sharing strategies for school-wide professional learning that deepens teacher knowledge and strengthens practice.

When: Tuesday 27th January, 2026
9:30 am – 2:30 pm

Solving the “I don’t know how to write it” Problem
When Students Know What to Say—But Not How to Write It

Every teacher has heard it: “I know that word, but I don’t know how to spell it.”

That’s not a capability problem—it’s a knowledge problem.

Catch Up Your Code teaches students how sounds map to print so they can write any word they can say.

Explicit instruction builds the missing bridge between speech, sound, and spelling—unlocking writing for every learner.

Developed by Joy Allcock (M.Ed.) and evidence-proven, this resource helps students catch up fast and stay on track—becoming confident writers and passing exams.

Kids love saying "numbat" as they listen, look, and link the sound to its letters.

The Science Behind /n/.

The /n/ sound is a voiced nasal consonant—felt through gentle vibration and airflow through the nose.

Teaching students to articulate /n/ correctly builds accurate sound-to-letter mapping, a cornerstone of structured literacy.

Model → Feel → Map → Write

Encourage learners to sustain nnnnn—and notice how the sound stops when they pinch their nose!
