Check out this doco short filmed in Ōtautahi Christchurch 👇🏼 It's releasing today on RNZ as part of the Day One Hāpai te Haeata shorts programme.

🎬 Single and approaching a mid-thirties birthday, Iranian-born Ōtautahi Christchurch-raised filmmaker, Shamin Yazdani, confronts the question she’s long avoided: should she freeze her eggs?

The film begins with a personal question but grows into a much broader reflection on identity, legacy, culture and the invisible pressures that shape our choices.

We are saddened by the passing of John Barnett, a man with a 50 year career in the screen industry.

John ran the country’s largest production company, South Pacific Pictures, from 1992 to 2015. He was a producer or executive producer on four of the country’s 10 top grossing films: Footrot Flats, Sione’s Wedding, Once Were Warriors sequel What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? and Bafta award winning Whale Rider.

He championed local voices and has left a massive mark on storytelling.

Thoughts go out to his family, friends, and colleagues.

🎬 Congratulations to our 48Hours Scholarship Recipients! 🎉

Screen CanterburyNZ and Te Puna Matarau - Canterbury Screen Industry Association are stoked to confirm scholarships for two incredible Ōtautahi teams taking on the legendary 48Hours!

⭐ Hermes Heroes – Led by the wildly creative duo Rata Jamieson and Buddy Booth, this team made 48Hours history last year with the competition’s first-ever 3D film (plus 300 custom glasses!). This year, they’re back with their signature energy, mixed media magic, and an even bolder vision.

⭐ The Best (Not) Boys – A fresh, non-male team fueled by friendship, snacks, and the pure joy of chaotic filmmaking. Half are first-timers, all are all-in. Expect bold ideas, sleep-deprived brilliance, and total commitment to the craft (and carbs).

We can’t wait to see what these two teams dream up in just 48 hours. The countdown is on – let the creativity (and caffeine) flow!

Inspiring. Honest. Emotive.

Storytelling at it's finest👌🏼

From one of the harshest places on earth, to the comfort of the cinema - Mighty Indeed screened at Christchurch's Doc Edge opening night - and what a way to kick off a festival!🎬

To top it off, we were lucky have Vanessa Wells and the three remarkable wāhine scientists who feature in the doco - Natalie Robinson, Jacqui Stuart and veteran sea ice physicist Professor Pat Langhorne - take part in a Q&A.

A fantastic night, indeed!
