Reading to children before bed has powerful effects on brain development and emotional health. Dads who read regularly help expand vocabulary at a remarkable pace, while moms who read reduce stress and create a sense of calm. These simple habits support cognitive and emotional growth simultaneously.

Vocabulary growth happens because listening to stories introduces new words and sentence structures. Children learn language patterns, comprehension, and expression through consistent exposure. Even brief daily reading sessions significantly increase the speed at which children acquire words and develop communication skills.

Stress reduction occurs through the comfort and bonding associated with bedtime stories. Hearing a familiar voice, feeling the presence of a parent, and engaging in a predictable routine lowers cortisol, the stress hormone, and supports emotional regulation. This creates a positive environment for both learning and rest.

Small, consistent reading sessions create lasting impacts. They strengthen parent-child connections, improve brain development, and enhance emotional wellbeing. The habit requires little time but provides enormous returns, demonstrating that thoughtful daily interactions are some of the most powerful tools for raising confident, healthy, and resilient children.

Big shout out to CLNZ from whom we received a grant this year to run wānanga with our editors to refine the Editor, Proof reader Guidelines we have developed with AUP.

These are an essential tool to enable editors to fulfil publishing industry standards. Equally, the revised Guidelines ensure the specificities of editing te reo Māori manuscripts are strengthened.

The CLNZ grant also funded individual mentoring by our Pou Reo Pānia Papa of editors working on three upcoming KRP titles - Rangatira, Te Puea and Manaaki.

There are currently no tertiary courses which offer training by practitioners with broad expertise in this field.

Kua kore te reo e rangona anō: he pakiwaitara
Ka kōrerohia e te heahea, tutū ana te heihei, te puehu,
Mō te kore noa iho te take.

MACBETH
Out, out, brief candle!
Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

E kore
a muri e hokia.—Ki te moe, ki te moe, e hoki ki te moe.

LADY MACBETH

To bed, to bed! there’s knocking at the gate:
come, come, come, come, give me your hand. What’s
done cannot be undone.—To bed, to bed, to bed!
