SURPRISE! Out today is a musical match from above, Shayne Carter and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. REforms is a retrospective of Carter’s songs (with one new composition) orchestrated with Tane Upjohn-Beatson and recorded with the NZSO.
The album originated from Carter’s collaborative concerts with the NZSO, where he curated a programme of his favourite classical works for the first half and then played a selection of his own songs with the orchestra for the second. That concert was itself the result of his intensive exploration of classical music leading up to his 2016 album Offsider, made up of piano-based songs, all written as he learnt the instrument from scratch.
