Keen to learn about the role and influence of French culture in nineteenth-century Christchurch and Banks Peninsula? Join Freerange Editor and book historian Emma Johnson for a free, bookable talk on Saturday 12 October, 10am, at the Alliance Française in Christchurch as part of the Christchurch City Council's Heritage Festival.

Celebrating archival material, this talk explores a forgotten area of our regional history: how a French presence, achieved through the diffusion of reading materials, continued long after the land became colonised by the British.

Featuring archival material from Akaroa Museum; the Macmillan Brown Library, University of Canterbury; Christchurch City Libraries. A massive merci to Alliance Française Christchurch - NZ for hosting this talk.

Want to see Ōtautahi through a new lens? Book in for New Foundations ($5 plus booking fees) at on Sun 5 May, 3-4pm. A group of young storytellers/writers share their reflections on one of their favourite buildings or spaces in Ōtautahi Christchurch and imagine another in a quick-fire celebration of words and the city.

First, these rangatahi explore our urban fabric by sharing their knowledge of Ōtautahi. Then, they document what is missing in the city by sketching out a longed-for space. Join us to hear stories that are stored in our architecture and revealed by our younger residents. Presented with thanks to Intangible Heritage Grant
