Eichardt’s is a Queenstown institution ... many of us will have spent many an evening there. But have you ever wondered how it all began?

Richly evocative and deeply inspiring, this book is more than a historical novel - it's a testament to the enduring strength of one remarkable woman whose story is finally being told.

Born in Ireland, raised in Australia, Julia arrived in Queenstown in her early 20's (1863), when the town was a rough & ready gold rush frontier. She met & married Albert Eichardt; together they transformed a modest lakeside inn into a thriving hotel on the shores of Lake Wakatipu.

When Albert died in 1882, Julia didn’t fade quietly into the background. Instead, she stepped forward. Determined and forward-thinking, she continued to expand and modernise the hotel - introducing electricity to every room, a first for Queenstown.

Author Lauren Roche calls Julia a visionary businesswoman who understood something few did at the time: “Gold towns come and go, but tourism will last forever.”
