Vanuatu RSE workers celebrate first-ever Bislama Language Week

Clifford Yahwo has been participating in the seasonal programme for 10 years, and he is feeling thankful he gets to witness this historic moment.

Clifford says it is great to have the opportunity to celebrate Bislama in Aotearoa.

“Vanuatu is a small country in the Pacific, close to Fiji, Solomon (Island), New Caledonia. I am so happy, like we are very happy we to celebrate here in New Zealand.

“Amuia le masina, e alu ma toe sau.”
Blessed is the moon for it shall return.

Congratulations Sau E Siva Creatives for another successful sold out show, Manumea Season 3! Manamea brings light to the Tsunami event that happened in Samoa 2009. 😭🕊

Sau e Siva is a South Auckland based Pacific Dance Theatre Collective founded by friends: Troy, Italia, Ida, Leki and Bob who are a passionate collective of Pasifika artists who weave multiple disciplines, diverse audiences and large-scale ensembles. 👏❤️

Manumea Season 3 is about A love story where “Palepa and Sitione” fall deeply in love with each other under a full moon, but due to their families’ ongoing land dispute conflict, Palepa and Sitione are forced to be on separate sides of the fence line.

Both families forgetting that the fruits belong to all, however, the land belongs to our Gafas—Ancestors. Just as the moon has a significant impact on the earth, such as influencing the sea level tides, we as caretakers of this land must respect and pay close attention to our surroundings, even at the break of dawn.

Highly emotional, creative, multi discipline kept everyone highly engaged from the beginning to the end. 👏🔥

Fa'afetai lava for the invitation! 🙏🏾

If you are in Australia, Sau E Siva Creatives are bringing Manumea to you! Please go and support and visit their platforms to stay updated. 🙏🏾

We Are Young Pacific Leaders ready for a new challenge

It has been an intense year to say the least for Young Pacific Leader (YPL) alumnus Gabriel Mara.

The 29-year-old ocean advocate and scientist from Fiji often represents his island nation as a negotiator and coordinator at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Group of 77 (G77).

Never one to shy away from a challenge, especially one which will impact his country, Gabriel’s most recent task involved submitting and defending his thesis, while also coordinating at the 62nd sessions of the UN Climate Change Subsidiary Bodies.

“Everything I have done here is to give back to my country and region. I give it my best … I will always put my hand up until someone else will.” Gabriel says

Halo from Beautiful Vanuatu! 🇻🇺❤️

Love mo Kastom working title, The Bride Price – Vanuatu is the first production under Aotearoa NZ Pacific Regional Media Fund. From the serene shores of Nguna, through the vibrant heart of Malekula, and onward to life in Aotearoa NZ, Love mo Kastom weaves a powerful love story set against the aftermath of a major earthquake. Amidst the rubble and uncertainty, a ni‑Vanuatu man and a part‑Tonga woman find each other—and find home—through kastom, culture, and connection. Their journey is a testament to resilience, tradition, and the unifying power of love.📽️

The milestone documentary is the result of months of hard mahi and collaboration between Vanuatu Broadcasting and Television Corporation (VBTC) Producer Rick Malao, and Head of Factual at Great Southern TV (GSTV) Adrian Stevanon.
In July 2024, NZ On Air, in partnership with Pacific Cooperation Broadcasting Limited (PCBL) announced the six recipients of the inaugural PRMF of $1.9m.

The Pacific Regional Media Fund empowers Pacific voices to tell Pacific stories on screen in ways that honour Pacific cultures, histories, identities and captures the emotion, the culture, and the story.

KASTOM is a pidgin word (Bislama/English) used to refer to traditional culture, including religion, economics, art and magic in Melanesia.
The word derives from the Australian English pronunciation of custom. Kastom is mostly not written only passed down through teachings and stories. It is concentrated through:
• Kastom House - sites where objects and rituals are stored.
• Kastom stories - myths, legends and communal histories.
• Kastom tabu - objects of special power, significance and symbolism.
