Shane van Gisbergen Warns NASCAR as Supercars Invasion Brings In Another Ringer
Shane van Gisbergen, the New Zealand-born Supercars champion, sent a bold message to NASCAR after announcing that fellow Supercars star Brodie Kostecki will join the Cup Series in 2025. Van Gisbergen, who won his 2023 NASCAR debut in Chicago, warned that Kostecki’s arrival signals a “Supercars invasion,” with more international talent eyeing the series. Kostecki, the 2023 Supercars champion, will race select events for Kaulig Racing, leveraging his road-course expertise. Van Gisbergen, now full-time with Trackhouse Racing, praised Kostecki’s aggressive style, predicting he’ll challenge NASCAR’s veterans. The influx of Supercars drivers, drawn by NASCAR’s growing global appeal, could reshape the sport. Van Gisbergen’s own success, including a 2024 playoff berth, underscores the threat. NASCAR teams are now scouting international talent, signaling a shift in the sport’s landscape.

With some huge entry news over the past few days, it’s time to take a close look at the route that competitors will face in this year’s Central Machine Hire Otago Rally.

After Friday night’s rally show and ceremonial start in Dunedin’s Octagon, the rally gets underway on Saturday morning with eight stages covering over 140 kilometres.

The opening test is a 34km run on the smooth arterial roads in the Berwick Forest, a stage that is repeated again on Sunday.

The competitive distance is a drawcard of the event, with a further 148 kilometres on Sunday for a total 15-stage distance of 290 kilometres.

All that with just 350 kilometres of touring!

In 2025 the rally returns to the fast and open stages around Middlemarch that are always popular with both drivers and spectators.

The rally finishes with the famed Kuri Bush stage on Sunday afternoon, where Hayden Paddon will try and beat the stage record in his 2016 Rally Argentina-winning Hyundai i20 WRC.

The rally is the first round of the Brian Green Properties NZ Championship and also a round of the Asia-Pacific and TER Rally Series.

The Central Machine Hire Otago Rally is grateful to the Dunedin City Council for Premier Event funding.
