The Big Myth of Overnight Success

“Why isn’t this working yet?”
Because it takes time. A lot more time than Instagram makes it look.

In this episode, Louis and I talk about what it’s really like to build a business from scratch and why that magical “overnight success” usually takes at least 18 months.

We dig into:
-Why a financial runway is essential
- What to do when motivation dips
-How to stay focused without a boss

If you’re in the messy middle, just know you’re not alone.
This one’s a big permission slip and a little pep talk.

New Podcast Episode - Epsode 10!
Are you really unemployed… or are you self-employed?

In our latest episode, Louis and I unpack the power of language and how it shapes our reality when we decide to work for ourselves. We share the unexpected (and often awkward) conversations we've had since leaving the 9–5, and why building your own business takes longer—but is worth it.

We also talk about financial runway, expectations, and what no one tells you about those early months of entrepreneurship.

I had the pleasure of attending 'Nature Connect' part of Priority One's Partnering for Nature programme. It brought together an incredible group of people who are doing the real work restoring, protecting, and healing the natural environment here in the Bay of Plenty.

There are some deeply dedicated individuals and communities out there, iwi-led projects, volunteers, environmental leaders, all caring for this land with passion and persistence.

These stories need to be told. Again and again. To inspire action, attract funding, and remind us what’s possible when people work together for something bigger than themselves.

I was reminded of the documentaries we created back in South Africa, capturing similar projects driven by love for land and legacy. The impact was always in the storytelling—the way it brought people into the mission.

There’s so much good happening here. Let’s help shine a light on it.

If you know a conservation group in need of content support or story strategy, send them our way.

Just start. Don’t wait. Don’t overthink.
That’s the closing advice from Hadleigh Ford, founder of SwipedOn in the final Made Here episode we filmed recently at the shared space studios in Tauranga City Central, .

He talks about:
- Building with people you trust.
- Keeping the idea simple.
- Using AI tools to remove barriers.
- Letting the work evolve with you.

Leo Stone ends the conversation with the same quiet confidence he began with, and we’re left with a powerful takeaway: You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to begin.

isn’t always glamorous. It’s also lonely, messy, and worth it...great wisdom in those words.

In Part 2 of our Made Here interview with Hadleigh Ford, founder of he reflects on the personal side of scaling a company.

From the outside, growth looks like success. But inside? It can feel isolating, uncertain, and full of self-doubt.

Leo Stone asks the kinds of questions that make space for honest answers, and Hadleigh was happy to deliver.

I love stories of innovation and none more than the story we recently filmed with Hadliegh Ford. He didn’t plan to found a global SaaS company, he was a harbour pilot who just wanted a better sign-in system for ships. That simple frustration turned into SwipedOn, now used in over 70 countries.

So when you ponder what ships, sign-in sheets, and a small South Island town have in common?

They’re all part of Hadleigh Ford’s accidental journey to founding
SwipedOn .

In this episode, created with Tall Community Trust, young interviewer Leo Stone leads a conversation about simplicity, opportunity, and the power of just starting.

It’s the kind of story that reminds us: great ideas don’t have to be complex. They just have to solve a real problem.

Your background doesn’t define your potential...

In Part 2 of her Made Here interview, Sarah Webb COO of reflects on how diversity of experience has shaped the success of LawVu and why tech needs people from all kinds of backgrounds.

Former lawyers are now thriving in product and customer roles. Sarah herself went from software engineer to CTO to COO. And she encourages young founders to stay open to reinvention.

Not knowing everything might be your biggest advantage!

In this first episode of the second chapter of , the youth-led interview series created with Community Trust, Sarah Webb, COO of sits down with young entrepreneur Stevie Newton to talk about what it really takes to start something bold.

Sarah, a computer science graduate who followed a curious spark all the way to co-founding a global legal tech company with four teammates. She didn’t have a legal background when she co-founded LawVu, and that turned out to be her edge. She knew what she didn’t know and built a strong co-founder team to fill those gaps.

What came through in the room (and on camera) was humility, humour, and honesty. A reminder that leadership isn’t about knowing it all—it’s about knowing what you need.
