Upper Hutt has huge potential, but we need a city centre where families want to spend time🍦

Last night I hosted a packed public meeting about the future of our city's heart at Mayfair Cafe. We were joined by an urban designer, an urban economist and a commercial property expert who shared their experiences in transforming towns and cities and developing policy tools that enable good change.

For those who couldn't make it, some key takeaways were:
🏢Apartments in the CBD can create vibrancy and a nighttime economy
🌳Well-located pocket parks can be transformational for a centre
🤔Council must understand their role - and it isn't getting involved in the business of development or giving away public money
🎯Invest in one area first - creating a precinct where good change can happen quickly and private investment will flow as a result
🙌Quick, affordable wins can make a big difference in building the case for longer-term transformative change
📚Having a well-thought-out strategy based on deep engagement with the community will last the test of time - and not end up becoming a coffee table book

Upper Hutt has good bones - we need strong, dedicated leadership to help us navigate our growing pains🤸‍♀️ I'm committed to making space for the community to develop a shared vision - at the end of the day, it's about how all of you want our city to feel and function.

Thank you to everyone who participated, and especially those who asked questions and came to kōrero afterwards! What a great evening 🤩

Over the next few years there will be significant changes happening across Lower Hutt – and as more work within Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi gets underway, there will be changes to how you move around the city.

Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi works are being delivered by three agencies – Hutt City Council, Greater Wellington and NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.

Large infrastructure projects like this are complex and disruption will be inevitable, but our team are working together to minimise this where possible.

Check our website for information about the main construction activities starting between now and December 2025: what work is happening, where it is and what this means for you. https://teawakairangi.co.nz/overview/coordinated-construction-programme/

Over the coming months, we’ll continue to update you with activities and timeframes as they are confirmed – this includes work happening in 2026 and beyond.

No cash in parking meters in Lower - vandalism

No cash in parking meters in Lower - vandalism

🚗 Heads up: we're making all of our parking meters cashless across the city.

Why? After a wave of vandalism and theft, we've had to replace 30 meters since the start of the year. That’s already cost around $114,000 – all for thieves to take less than $3,000 in cash.

Conversion to card-only payments will begin on Monday 18 August and is expected to be completed within two weeks.

The PayMyPark app is also a really easy way to pay and you can extend or cancel your parking session from your phone.

We understand that some people are more comfortable using coin meters. We would like to keep this option available, but when replacing a single meter costs $2,500-$7,000, the numbers just don’t stack up for ratepayers.

Check out our webpage at hutt.city/paying-for-parking for a video on how to use the card-only meters and a step-by-step guide to using the PayMyPark app.

Thanks for your support as we protect our infrastructure and keep our city moving.
