“To read this gorgeous book is to read the bush again, to read deeper into the past and deeper into the present. The sublime illustrations bring each tree to life, while the facts will help you read the trees in new lights.”

Thank you to Paula Green for this wonderful review of Rākau: The Ancient Forests of Aotearoa by Ned Barraud! You can read the full review at the link below 🌳

OUT NOW

The Wild Wellington Ngā Taonga Taiao 2026 Calendar is available to order from Te Papa Store and select book and gift shops around Wellington.

Have you ever seen a kekeno New Zealand fur seal basking on a rock, a flock of kākā flying overhead, or a kiwi walking through a tangle of ferns? You can find all these and more in our ‘natural capital’.

This calendar accompanies Wild Wellington Ngā Taonga Taiao by Michael Szabo, a handy and informative illustrated guide that highlights over 30 of the best wild and urban places to discover and explore the region’s natural diversity, from the south coast to Kapiti.

The 2026 Wild Wellington calendar provides monthly highlights of what to see where and when for locals and visitors, keen and casual wildlife watchers, or for anyone curious about their own back yard.

You might notice a lot of nature-themed books in this week's bestsellers. That's because we had the pleasure of selling books at Otari-Wilson Bush open day, where we had a wonderful time listening to authors talking about their books. Last week we also hosted Gina Butson and Michelle Duff in the shop to chat about their brilliant books (of which we still have signed copies available 😉), which sit at number 5 & 6 on the list. Democracy remains a hot topic, with Geoffrey Palmer up the top of our list following his event with us a couple of weeks ago. AND there's even books from FUTURE guests on there, with both H.G. Parry and Ruth Paul set to talk in the shop in November. 🤯

What does this all mean? I think it means you need to take a look at our upcoming events...
