Our Director of Photography Jono Obern answers the burning question 🔥🔥🔥

The question: If push came to shove, what’s the one film that inspired you to pick up a camera, and why?

“It has to be Jurassic Park! I remember getting the VHS for Christmas when I was 5 years old. It completely captivated me. The opening scene where the gate keeper is eaten alive by a cunning and fiercely intelligent raptor, to the epic T-rex breakout, and of course that film score! It still brings tears to my eyes to this day. To feel so much emotion from moving images, I knew this would stay with me for life. The beauty of instilling fear, sadness, joy and wonderment from story telling is such a gift I am forever grateful for, be that from my own work or from others.”

We asked our Composer Liam Reid the burning question 🔥🔥🔥

The question: If push came to shove, what’s the one composer that made you want to score films, and why?

“There are so many composers that have played such a crucial role in my creative development. As quite an emotional person, music has always been something that truly grounds me in a film. It’s what makes you believe the impossible is actually occurring in front of your eyes. So due to this sentiment the one composer that made me want to score film is without question, John Williams. Without John Williams’ music - the force isn’t real, you’re not scared of sharks, dinosaurs don’t walk the earth, and bikes don’t fly. These iconic moments are seared into my brain. I still remember the first time I watched Jaws and the sheer terror that film invoked in me with that ominous two note motif paired with the shark POV shots - just exhilarating! It was the same when I heard the opening fanfare of Star Wars. The power of that music, the sheer sense of adventure that pours out of those chords, those melodies! These are the type of moments I long to create in my own work. Moments that make you believe in the impossible.”

Our Producer Paris Renalson answers the burning question 🔥🔥🔥

The question: If push came to shove, what’s the one film that inspired you to become a filmmaker and why?

“I loved watching movies growing up. Both my parents had an extensive collection of VHS tapes and DVDs. There were multiple films that inspired me to become the filmmaker I am today from ‘Good Morning, Vietnam’, ‘The Incredibles’, ‘Children of Men’, and ‘Scream’. But no film gave me more joy than ‘Back to the Future’. Back to the Future was the earliest film I can recall that made me ask, “How did they do that?”. It is the quintessential depiction of time travel. I always found myself wanting to know more, and even after learning about all the fascinating behind-the-scenes stories the film never felt out of reach. Produced with state-of-the-art visual effects, backed by 80s juggernaut Steven Spielberg, featuring a charismatic lead in Michael J. Fox, those two-hours grip you, fully. It’s a film I still revisit to this day and always learn something new from. It’s fun, intentional, and rewatchable — three qualities I aspire to bring to all of my own projects. Oh, and the soundtrack and score are absolutely iconic!”

The question: If push came to shove, what’s the one film that made you pursue a career in editing, and why? 🐭

‘I’d have to say Hot Fuzz 😂. I think I’ve seen it over a dozen times and it never gets old. The combination of smart choppy cuts and transitions combined with perfectly timed gags and callbacks just prove how a film can be made super fun not only in the script but in the edit as well. (I then of course once I got into editing I quickly realized how long it takes to get it right 😅)

In saying that editing to me as a whole feels like such a personal thing for each person who wants to get into it. I guarantee you could give a string of clips to ten different editors and you’ll get ten different results, all stamped and flourished in their own unique way. That to me is the beauty of editing! 😁’ - Michael Kenna

Adam Herbert, co-star of Hush Little Mouse, answers the burning question 🔥🔥🔥

The question: What performances, films, or other did you draw inspiration from when preparing to play the character of ‘The Mouse’? 🐭

‘How do you embody a mouse? A psycho killer mouse?! For this role, I definitely drew heavy inspiration from the physicality of horror icons such as Michael Meyers and Jason Vorhees. They’re such terrifying monsters because they’re not in any rush to gut you and flay you like the teen scream that you are. Slow, steady, determined, relentless - and speechless. There’s something so primal and terrifying about this type of villain.

A question I get asked a lot is how did that we get that dying mouse sound while im pinned under the car, is it sound design or real? It was 100% real, and I guess I prepared for that by being a weirdo little ADHD boi who’s always stimming and making weird as f**k noises - comes in handy!’ - Adam Herbert

Tuesday Howery answers the BURNING QUESTION 🔥

If push came to shove, what’s the one film that inspired you to pursue a career in special effects makeup and why?

Tuesday answers-
It’s hard to pick just one film that peaked my interest in Special Effects Makeup the most. In all honesty, it was a T.V show on Sci-Fi called “FaceOff” that ran when I was about 12 or 13. It’s a competitive reality Prosthetics Makeup show that I just loved watching and it was then that I realized Prosthetics Makeup was a real job. From then on, I knew that was what I was going to do. My first few teachers in SFX were on that show, Kevon Ward and Rachael Wagner.

Though if I were to choose a film, I don’t know, perhaps “Alien.” I remember walking down the stairs as a kid and my parents were watching the 1979 “Alien” film and the baby Xenomorph bursts from the actors chest. I screamed and crouched down on the stairs, but stayed and watched through the cracks of my fingers covering my face, I was curious.

Close seconds would be “Beetlejuice” “The Shape of Water” or “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”.
