If you’re planning to hike Tongariro Alpine Crossing, here’s what to know:

✔ Distance: 20.2 km
✔ Time: 6–8 hrs average
✔ Difficulty: Moderate–challenging
✔ Elevation gain: ~700–800m
✔ Best season: Late spring–early autumn

Things that you should know:
– It’s a point-to-point track, not a loop (arrange transport)
– The Red Crater climb is the toughest section
– Weather can shut it down quickly
– There’s almost no shelter from sun or wind
– Check conditions with the Department of Conservation before going

Hard but SO worth it for those Emerald Lakes views.

Things I wish I knew before hiking Tongariro Alpine Crossing: 👇

🏔️ 1. Know your Fitness Level:
Fitness Level Guide (Be Honest With Yourself)
Distance: 19.4 km (12 miles)
Time: 6–8 hours average
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
Elevation gain: ~700–800m

✅ Beginner Fitness
You can walk 8–10km comfortably on flat ground.
Start training 4–6 weeks before.
Do incline treadmill/stair climbing 2–3x per week.
Practice a 12–15km hike before going.
Expect sore legs after 😅

✅ Intermediate Fitness
You hike occasionally or work out regularly.
Do 1–2 long hikes (15km+) before.
Add hill/stair workouts weekly.
You’ll manage fine but Red Crater descent is tough.

✅ Advanced Fitness
You regularly hike mountains.
You’ll be comfortable.
Focus more on weather prep than fitness.
If you struggle with long uphill climbs or loose gravel descents, train specifically for that.

🎒 2. Essential Gear Checklist

Wear:

Proper hiking boots (broken in!)
Moisture-wicking base layer
Insulating mid-layer (fleece/down)
Waterproof/windproof jacket
Hiking socks
Hat + sunglasses

Pack:
2–3L water (no refill stations)
High-energy snacks/lunch
Gloves + beanie (even in summer)
Sunscreen (UV is strong at altitude)
Small first aid kit
Portable charger
Trekking poles (game changer on descent)
Lightweight rain cover
🚫 No jeans. No fashion sneakers.

🌦️ 3. Weather & Safety Prep
Check official alerts before you go.
Alpine weather changes FAST.
Wind chill can make it feel near freezing.
If severe weather is forecast — postpone.
Start early (before 8am recommended).
Book shuttle in advance (it’s one-way).

🧠 4. Mental Prep (Underrated)
The Red Crater climb is steep and exposed.
The descent is loose volcanic gravel.
There’s limited shelter from wind.
Toilets are spaced out.
It’s not a casual scenic stroll — it’s a real alpine hike.

🗓️ Best Season
Peak season: November–April (busiest)
Winter: Requires alpine experience & proper gear.
Located in Tongariro National Park, this hike is stunning but demands respect

One does not simply walk into Mordor... (without taking a photo) 🌋
