Wanted to do a little dedication post for Hide but my friends over at Galaxy Bar worded it perfectly in this post..
My most memorable moment at hide? Getting to compete in NZ's 2019 Rumble in the jungle DJ competition there, alongside a stellar lineup of selectas, including my homies op**te and 360. You will be missed hide.
GALAXY BAR CELEBRATES Hide
Like many across Christchurch and Aotearoa, we were saddened to hear of the closing of HIDE.
For over a decade, HIDE has been more than just a venue. It has been a home for music, creativity, connection, and community. It provided a stage where artists, DJs, promoters, and music lovers could come together, discover new sounds, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
What made HIDE special was not simply the sound system, the lights, or the events. It was the people. It was the willingness to back emerging talent, to take chances on new ideas, and to create a space where creativity could flourish.
Here at The Galaxy, we regularly host open decks, alternative events, and community-focused music gatherings. Many of the DJs who have stepped behind our decks have shared the same dream: one day playing at HIDE. For many, receiving that booking was a milestone. It was validation. It was recognition from a venue that carried genuine respect within the music community.
One of the greatest gifts HIDE gave Christchurch was its ability to validate and support creative people. It gave opportunities to emerging artists, helped launch careers, and encouraged countless individuals to keep creating, performing, and believing in themselves.
Beyond the music, HIDE provided an epic space for people to gather, socialise, connect, and belong. Friendships were formed, communities were built, and countless nights became stories that will be retold for years to come.
This news comes not long after Christchurch farewelled another iconic creative space, FLUX. The loss of venues like these reminds us that music communities are never static. They evolve. They change shape and form. Spaces open, spaces close, and the people who make up the scene carry the culture forward into the next chapter.
While it is difficult to see venues we love disappear, Christchurch has always been resilient. The city has repeatedly reinvented itself through creativity, passion, and community. We are already seeing new spaces emerge, new promoters step forward, and new communities form. We are particularly inspired by the rise of The Underpass and the energy it has brought to the city's underground music culture. We remain in love with The Dark Room and Space Academy It is a reminder that while venues may come and go, the spirit of Christchurch's creative community remains alive and well.
Venues like HIDE are not easy to replace. They are built over years through passion, risk, hard work, and a genuine commitment to culture. The impact HIDE has had on Christchurch's music scene reaches far beyond its walls and will continue to be felt through the artists it supported and the communities it helped create.
To everyone who worked there, played there, promoted there, danced there, and called it home — thank you. You made CHCH Lively and awesome.
From all of us at The Galaxy, we offer our respect, gratitude, and appreciation for everything HIDE has contributed to Christchurch's creative community.
We have been sitting here for 30 years hosting gigs and parties, an alternative gathering place for creative folk, we only hope we get the privallage of continuing to do so.
Because while a venue may close its doors, the culture, connections, inspiration, and opportunities it created continue long after the final track fades out.
