A local man returning to Whangamatā after an extended overseas stint has reportedly been left questioning whether he has actually returned to the correct town after discovering Oliver’s Bakery has mysteriously disappeared.
The man, who had apparently been looking forward to returning to the familiar surroundings of 100 Aickin Road, is said to have approached the bakery before stopping abruptly.
“Where the f**k is Olivers?” he reportedly asked.
According to witnesses, the man spent several seconds staring at the building before checking his phone, looking around the surrounding area and ultimately concluding that he had, in fact, not somehow landed in a different town.
The location is now home to Dough & Bean Bakery, a rebrand that appears to have taken place entirely without consulting Whangamatā residents who have been overseas.
“I leave for a bit and suddenly everything has changed,” the man reportedly said. “I don't know what’s going on anymore.”
The returning local is believed to have walked past the entrance approximately three times before finally entering and asking a staff member what the f**k happened to Olivers.
Staff reportedly confirmed that the bakery was still the same place, despite the complete lack of any recognisable signage.
At press time, the man was understood to be coming to terms with the situation and had reluctantly accepted that Dough & Bean is, in fact, the new Olivers.
Further investigation into whether anything else in Whangamatā has changed while he was away is ongoing.
