Hotspots of water scarcity could emerge by the 2020s and 2030s across the Mediterranean, southern Africa and North America, as climate change intensifies droughts, a new study said on Tuesday.
Scientists have established that climate change is making droughts longer, stronger and more frequent, but less well understood is when and where these extreme dry conditions could trigger acute shortages of drinking water.
South Africa's Cape Town faced the threat of a "Day Zero Drought", where the taps nearly ran dry for millions of people in 2018. India's Chennai faced a similar crisis the following year.
In new peer-reviewed research in the journal Nature Communications, researchers warned that the frequency of "Day Zero" episodes could increase much sooner than previously anticipated.

The Sultanate of Oman is experiencing an explosive rise, driven by mobile and instant payment solutions, which also underscores the need for robust cybersecurity and regulatory safeguards to maintain the integrity of its financial system.
According to the Financial Stability Report 2025, the Mobile Payments Clearing and Switching System (MPCSS) experienced the strongest growth among all systems, with volume surging by 318.6% and value increasing by 223.5%.
The report said that the rapid expansion of OmanNet and MPCSS indicates a significant transition to cashless payments. This shift supports financial stability by reducing dependency on physical cash and promoting efficient digital ecosystems. Along with ACH, both systems are key enablers of digital transformation, supporting Oman’s strategic push toward digital financial services.

The Court of Appeal in Suhar confirmed the conviction of Manar bint Salih bin Marhoon, an Omani national, on charges of money laundering. She was sentenced to six months in prison, fined RO 5,000, and ordered to forfeit the illicit funds deposited into her bank account or their equivalent value.
The court also required her to pay judicial expenses.
According to the Public Prosecution, the defendant collaborated with an unidentified party to channel illegal funds into the financial system. She was aware that the money originated from fraudulent activities, including online scams and unauthorised access to banking data.
The court confirmed that she manipulated transactions to make the money appear lawful before transferring portions of it into multiple accounts for the purchase of digital currencies, which were then moved abroad as part of the laundering process.
