WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF A SHARK APPEARS UNDER YOUR SURFBOARD?

Imagine waiting for a wave when suddenly… you see a shark swimming directly beneath your board.

The first thing to do is stay calm and avoid sudden movements. Don’t try to touch, chase, or hit the shark.

If it’s safe to do so, keep the shark in sight and slowly move away from the area. If other surfers are nearby, calmly alert them without creating panic.

If the shark remains in the area, the safest option is to make your way back to shore and leave the water, especially if there is an official shark warning or the animal is behaving unusually.

⚠️ Remember: seeing a shark doesn’t automatically mean an attack is coming, but it is a reason to increase your caution.

Have you ever wondered what could be happening beneath the waves before you even enter the ocean? 🦈

Before paddling out, a surfer should check several things:

🌊 Ocean conditions: wave size and power, currents, and rip currents.
🌫️ Visibility: very murky water can make it harder to see what is happening around you.
🐟 Fish activity: large schools of fish or fishing activity can indicate increased predator activity.
🦈 Signs of sharks: fins, unusual fish behavior, or recent local sightings.
🌧️ Weather conditions: storms, heavy rainfall, and sudden changes can quickly alter ocean conditions.

And there’s one important rule:

When it comes to sharks, the risk of a bite is still very low. However, the International Shark Attack File recommends avoiding isolated situations because sharks may sometimes approach solitary individuals.

But there’s another important reason: having someone with you means help is nearby. If you suffer an injury, get caught in a strong current, or experience another emergency, a companion can call for help much faster.

Surf zones can also overlap with areas where sharks naturally search for food. Conditions such as murky water, breaking waves, and strong currents can reduce visibility.

So this isn't only about sharks. Surfing with others is a basic ocean-safety measure.

WHY DO SURFERS APPEAR SO OFTEN IN SHARK ENCOUNTER RECORDS?

In 2025, surfers and other board-sport participants accounted for 32% of confirmed unprovoked shark bites worldwide.

But that doesn't mean sharks are specifically targeting surfers.

Surfing places people directly in the surf zone, where sharks may naturally hunt. Sandbars, breaking waves, strong currents, and areas where fish gather can all bring sharks and surfers into the same space.

There’s another interesting factor: from below the surface, a shark may see a moving surfboard and the silhouette of a person rather differently than we do from above.

The International Shark Attack File notes that many encounters in the surf zone are single-bite incidents in which the shark does not return, with poor visibility and turbulent water potentially contributing to mistaken identity.

Surfers aren't necessarily being targeted—they're often sharing the same habitat where sharks naturally feed.

When a shark approaches a person, it may be using its highly developed senses to determine what the object is, whether it could be food, whether it poses a threat, or whether it can simply be ignored.

The International Shark Attack File notes that some sharks may approach divers or swimmers out of curiosity and then move away on their own.

🩸🦈 DOES THE SMELL OF BLOOD REALLY TRIGGER AN IMMEDIATE SHARK ATTACK?

What if the famous idea that “one drop of blood brings sharks rushing in” isn’t actually true?

Sharks have an extremely sensitive sense of smell and can detect substances released into the water, including blood. But detecting blood does not automatically trigger an attack.

In fact, the International Shark Attack File states that sharks have not been shown to be attracted specifically to the smell of human blood. Their behavior depends on many factors, including the species, environment, prey availability, and what other signals are present.

Interestingly, blood combined with vibrations from an injured fish can be particularly relevant. ISAF notes that these signals can attract sharks toward spearfishers and their catch.

So the reality is more fascinating than the myth:

A shark may detect blood… but detecting it doesn't mean an attack is coming.
