Who remembers the Chevy Celebrity was a race car for a hot minute?📦

Of the schemes that have run so far this year, which one do y'all like best? I never thought I'd say this but the Raptor scheme is still my favorite. I would put Valvoline second and then Liberty last.

Barbecue on (Dry) Ice 🍗🧊
➡️During pre-qualifying inspection for the 1986 Firecracker 400 Sterling Marlin’s no.1 Bull’s Eye Barbecue Sauce Chevrolet was pulled out of line by the NASCAR inspectors for a little closer look.
What peaked NASCAR’s interest? A little metal box mounted in the right front fender. Upon further inspection, NASCAR found that the mysterious little metal box was packed with dry ice…and wouldn’t you know, the Unocal 76 racing fuel was routed right through that little box. Had it not been caught, the delivery of cooled fuel to the engine would’ve meant a little extra horsepower to pull Sterling around the big super speedway.
After finding the incognito cooling system, NASCAR Winston Cup series director Dick Beaty forced the team to remove the box before going out to qualify and fined car Hoss Ellington $5,000 bucks. Of which Ellington lamented was entirely to steep of a fine for something he deemed as “not technically illegal” and that he knew for certain that several other cars in the Daytona garage area where fitted with a similar device.
Sterling’s troubles weren’t over. After the dry ice was removed, he then experienced ignition issues and was unable to complete a qualifying lap, forcing him to qualify on day two. At the time, NASCAR only locked in the top 20 fastest cars into the field on the first day of qualifying. Cars qualifying on day two could start no higher than 21st place, regardless if they’re were faster than any of the cars locked in on day one. Which is exactly what Sterling did. Not only did Marlin post a faster speed than pole sitter Cale Yarborough, but he set the record for the faster qualifying speed for the Firecracker 400 ever up to that point.
Even without the dry ice Sterling proved he had a really fast car, on race day he rallied from his 21st place starting position to lead a handful of laps and would ultimately finish second to Tim Richmond.
Sterling later commented on the whole dry ice ordeal by saying, with his patented Marlin shoulder shrug and grin, “They caught us, what else can you do?”🤷🏼‍♂️

He’s okay! During the 1956 Southern 500 at Darlington, a young 24 year old driver named D**k Widenhouse was involved in a multi-car crash on lap 158. Though D**k wasn’t seriously injured in the accident, he did suffer a laceration on his arm. Legend has it that as D**k was attempting to climb out of his no. 29 Ford he caught his first glimpse the cut on his arm. Overcome by the sight of his own blood, D**k passed out while simultaneously getting tangled up in his seat belts, leaving him in this precarious position. Track personnel freed and got D**k back on his feet and he lived to race another day. D**k was credited for 54th place in the final rundown of the ‘56 Southern 500, a race that started 70...yes, SEVENTY cars.
D**k Widenhouse bounced back in a big way, he won the 1957 track championship at Coastal Speedway in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Recently, D**k made a few appearances in the new season of with dalejr and matthewdillner where he discussed his success in the Myrtle Beach area in the early 1960s. 🏁

Didn't come away with either win but a very solid weekend at COTA. Would've had the Xfinity pole but short cutting the S's cost him the lap that would've been pole. Came home P2 in the race and kept up with AJ right until the end. On the Cup side he won his first pole of the season and was able to keep up with Tyler Reddick who hands down had the best car. Came home P5 and with the usual bash em all the end became, I will gladly take a Top 5. Richmond is next which he almost won last year. Hopefully this momentum can continue there next weekend.
