Women's swimming events were first introduced at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, with competitions in the 100m freestyle, 400m freestyle, and 4x100m freestyle relay.
American swimmer Katie Ledecky is one of the most dominant female Olympians in history, winning 7 gold medals and 3 silver medals across the 2012, 2016, and 2020 Olympics, primarily in freestyle distance events.
In 2016, Simone Manuel became the first African-American woman to win an individual swimming gold medal, winning the 100m freestyle in Rio.
