MEDCAP or Medical Civic Action Program is a military initiative comprising of PNG Defence Force, Australian Defence Forces and the New Zealand Defence Forces.
Together with the PNG Directorate of Health Services they have delivered healthcare to 13 remote communities in East New Britain so far.
The PNGDFs involvement is centred on introducing its new officers especially cadets with medical background to the working environment to get a practical feel of what a Combat Medic should do.
The Program also allows the PNGDF to gain experience in treating conditions in both the Rural and Coastal Environments.
Combat Medics are responsible in providing emergency medical treatment to soldiers at the point of wounding in a combat or training environment as well as primary care and health protection.
According to PNGDF Medical Officer Major Roselyn Wia she said that the soldiers who are the medical officers have been brought out to sharpen their skills as part of their assessment they were also there to strengthen ties between the PNGDF and the local communities.
A total of 11 PNGDF Officers have undergone this training, it is part of an ongoing training at Goldie River Barracks.
While in East New Britain they were deployed to various remote areas in the province.
In ENB 13 Locations they are were stationed at, Marunga, Open Bay, Raunsepna, Molot, Guma, Nutuve, Muela, Matong,Pomio, Palmalmal, Viosopina, Aona and Uvol.
On Monday 24th November, the teams went to Visit Molot in the Duke of York LLG and Raunsepna in the Inland Baining LLG,
The team who visited the Molot Clinic in the Duke of York had set up at the make shift clinic that was used by the staff to serve the 13,000 catchment population of the clinic.
This Program also allows the PNGDF to demonstrate their force projection capabilities in the country especially in both the urban and rural environments
