PNG University of Natural Resources and Environment Vice Chancellor Professor Aisak Pue acknowledged the Honourable Prime Minister Mr. James Marape and NECโs support of K100,000 for the 50th Independence Anniversary Celebration to UNRE similar to other institutions.
The funding has supported the University Independence Committee to successfully host a colourful and successful trouble-free celebration with the highlight being the building of 20 cultural provincial houses with a traditional village setting by students in a unity village concept.
Professor Pue said it was a significant occasion for Papua New Guineans to be proud to witness the 50 years Golden Jubilee as one country in achieving countless milestones in particular developing an advanced education system of schools, colleges, hospitals and universities enabling it to produce its own doctors, bureaucrats, scientists, engineers, pilots, and personnel with higher degree qualifications of masters and PhDs level comparable to those of other countries in the world.
He said during independence the countryโs forefathers were faced with the mammoth challenge of not having many qualified people due to many expatriates leaving that the country had to struggle to produce a qualified manpower to run the country.
He said little did our forefathers and mothers knew that the onerous task of raising a generation that could take PNG forward.
PNG has done what it could in this generation and challenged the next generation of the next 50 years to advance PNG further as a modern country according to the dreams and aspirations of its people.
However, the VC said that more needs to be done for this country and he reminded UNRE that it has a significant role to play in preserving and developing the natural resources for the coming generations and that the world also has a lot to learn from PNGโs ancient sustainable living systems.
He added that the different displays of the countryโs unique traditions, crafts and artifacts will disappear one day and it is important that the generation today must preserve those cultures and traditions especially those that need to be adopted to benefit society.
Professor Pue acknowledged and commended the University Independence Committee led by Pro Vice Chancellor Planning and Development, Dr Livingstone Tavul, Acting Pro Vice Chancellor Academic, Mr Peter Navus, the University Registrar Mrs Jennifer Popat and the members of the Senior Management and the members of the Committee for making the 50th Golden Jubilee Celebration successful and memorable one.
