SIMBU PHA STAFF TRAIN TO COMBAT POLIO.

[06th of August 2025]

The Simbu Provincial Health Authority (SiPHA) staff are undergoing a three-day training on polio vaccination and outbreak response. The training, which runs from today until Friday, is being led by a consultant from the World Health Organization (WHO) and aims to prepare staff for an upcoming polio immunization drive.

Dr. Amer Attique, the WHO consultant, stated during the training that a single confirmed case of polio is considered an outbreak. He explained that the most common way the virus spreads is through the fecal-oral route. He noted that infected individuals shed the poliovirus for several weeks, allowing it to spread quickly within communities.

Dr. Attique also warned that in areas with low immunization rates, the virus can spread from one unvaccinated child to another over a long period (12-18 months), causing it to mutate. This mutated form, known as circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPVs), can then cause paralysis and spread just like the wild poliovirus.

SiPHA CEO Dr. Kassi Ken officially opened the training by highlighting the critical importance of the work. He acknowledged that Simbu's immunization rates are "very challenging," with the provincial average falling below 50%—a rate he described as "one of the worst in the world."

Challenging the trainees, Dr. Ken stated that the success or failure of the program rests on their shoulders. He urged them to remain focused and learn from the facilitators, emphasizing that if they fail to listen and apply the knowledge, they will be failing the people of Simbu.

The training focuses on three key strategies for an effective polio outbreak response:

Protecting children aged 0-10 from poliovirus-induced paralysis.

Preventing the wider spread and stopping the circulation of the virus.

Strengthening routine immunization programs.

The training will equip SiPHA staff to carry out effective awareness campaigns and implement the immunization program to help protect the community from polio.

MAUBEREMA CONTINUES TO HOST UNIVERSITY STUDENTS FOR INDUSTRIAL JOB TRAINING.
[August 5, 2025 ]

The Mauberema Ecotourism Nature Conservation Resource & Training Centre (MENCERTC) has welcomed five final-year students from the University of Goroka's Bachelor of Biological and Environmental Science program for a six-week industrial job training experience. The students participated in a formal induction ceremony, marking the beginning of their hands-on training.

According to MENCERTC Director and Founder Moses Kerry, the students will gain practical experience through project site visits and scoping exercises, culminating in the design of a specific project to work on during their tenure.

He highlighted that students will participate in research projects, assessments, and cultural documentation, contributing to the preservation of Mauberema's natural beauty and culture. Students gain hands-on experience through internships, applying theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges in conservation and ecotourism.

He said the program fosters collaboration between students, local communities, and MENCERTC, promoting mutual understanding and benefits.

" Our aim is to equip students with skills and knowledge to contribute to sustainable development and conservation efforts in the region. Foster a new generation of conservationists and ecotourism professionals who can help protect PNG's unique environment and culture" he said.

" We also empower local communities through education, training, and economic opportunities, promoting self-reliance and sustainability," Mr Kerry said.

MENCERTC has a strong track record of hosting students as part of its partnership program with the University of Goroka, including its Enga Campus. This initiative aims to promote conservation efforts, sustainable development, and community engagement in the region.

By working together, MENCERTC and the University of Goroka demonstrate their dedication to education, training, and community development. The partnership between the two organizations is a testament to their commitment to equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in their chosen fields.

SIMBU IS READY FOR PNG 50TH INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS AMIDST FUNDING CONSTRAINTS.
[July 31, 2025]

Simbu Governor Noah Kool has announced plans to host the 50th Independence Celebrations in September, with a budget of K1 million allocated for the festivities. During the opening of the Wara Simbu Buai Market, Governor Kool highlighted that the Simbu Provincial Government (SPG) will host celebrations in three locations: Kundiawa town, Gembogl station, and Karamui.

Additionally, Governor Kool announced plans to support the Kundiawa Gembogl District in hosting the celebrations, despite the electorate being without a member due to an ongoing court case. He emphasized that this decision demonstrates the SPG's commitment to promoting unity and inclusivity among communities.

"All six districts will have their own celebrations, showcasing the province's rich cultural heritage and other interesting programs. Our initiative aims to promote Simbu's cultural identity and economic development by hosting the celebrations in multiple locations. We seek to foster unity and inclusivity among ourselves." Governor Kool said.

However, he expressed concerns about the insufficient funding received from the national government for this year.

"We are facing significant development challenges due to funding shortages. The province received only K2 million from the national government, with K1 million allocated for the 50th Independence Celebrations, highlighting the severe funding constraints," he said.

He added that this funding shortfall has affected essential government functions in Simbu, with the province's budget warrants covering only 16% of its K36 million allocation so far. This limited funding impacts essential services and infrastructure development in the province.

Papua New Guinea will celebrate its 50th Independence Anniversary on September 16, 2025, with the theme "Celebrate Our History, Inspire Our Future."//.

"BETEL NUT SELLERS IN KUNDIAWA TOLD TO RELOCATE: K500.00 BAIL FOR DEFIANCE.

[28th of July 2025]

The Simbu Provincial Government's "Take Back Kundiawa" program has taken a significant step forward with the relocation of the betel nut markets in Kundiawa town vicinity to the newly built Wara Simbu Buai Market. As part of this initiative, betel nut sellers at Wara Market, Yuai Market, Ega and street vendors in the town vicinity have been ordered to move to the new market, citing the need to beautify the town, control overcrowding, littering, and extend town roads and business hubs.

During the opening of the newly built Wara Simbu Buai Market today, Governor Noah Kool said the "Take Back Kundiawa" program is a comprehensive initiative aimed at restoring the town's beauty, improving infrastructure, and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents. He emphasized that the relocation of the betel nut market is one of key components of this program.

Governor Kool emphasizes that the relocation is part of a few other programs and projects under the take back Kundiawa. "Despite finicial constraints i want to assure the people of Simbu that we will try our best to finish on what we started," he said.

Simbu Provincial Administrator John Punde commands Governor's vision on the 'Tke Back Kundiawa'program and urged communities to be responsible and take ownership of the initiatives.

"This is an economic hub. Welcome this opportunity with open arms and make the most of it so we can benefit from the spin-offs," he said.

Simbu Provincial Police Commander [PPC] Superintendent Mazuc Rubiang warned that anyone found selling or buying betel nuts in the town vicinity will face a strict bail of K500 effective immediately.

"The relocation effort aims to address law and order concerns and the impact of betel nut sales on our town appearance and infrastructure. I expect full cooperation from you all", he said.

In a positive turn of events, the Wara Simbu community has welcomed the new market development and pledged to take ownership of the initiative.

Alois Bepwick, representing the community, assured that they will conduct business in a free and orderly manner, adhering to the rules and regulations of the new market.

With the community's cooperation, the "Take Back Kundiawa" initiative is expected to bring positive changes to the town, improving the business environment and quality of life for residents. The community is expected to benefit from the initiative, which aims to transform Kundiawa into a thriving economic hub in the near future.

KUNDIAWA TOWN WITHOUT WATER//.
[Friday 25th of July 2025]

Public institutions, residential areas and Hospital in Kundiawa town of Simbu will go without water for some time due to the continous issue between the landowners and government over the payment for the land where the water source is located.

Plaintiff and the Chirman of the landowner group, Samuel Kupo, in a statement released today, stated that the Kundiawa water supply officially shut down for an indefinite period effective immediately

He said this action has become necessary due to unresolved landowner issues, which must be addressed before normal water services can resume.

" Be assured that this decision was not made lightly or without due consideration. It follows extensive discussions and attempts to resolve the matter amicably," he said.

Mr. Kupo said there are so many underlying and connecting issues in play, and this is only a temporary measure of action, however, will depend on the response of the Simbu Provincial Government and water PNG.

" We've avoided doing this for the last 20 years, and today we take this action so that our concern must be adress before normal water services can resume in Kundiawa," he said.
He, on behalf of the landowners, assured the residents of Kundiawa, businesses, and the hospital that they are committed to resolving these issues. Once agreements are reached, the water supply will resume.

This situation has caused concern for various sectors, including the hospital, government institutions, and business houses.

Michel Gaima, a concerned resident, said the lack of water supply is particularly concerning for the hospital, which relies heavily on a consistent water supply for its operations.

Simbu Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Mazuc Rubiang is also aware of it and urged the relevant authorities to solve the matter then denying it as the people would suffer from health hazards that could be brought about if the water supply shut down is prolonged.

Several attempts made to get the comments from Simbu Provincial Government and the Water PNG were unsuccessful.

KUA: NO COUNTRY CAN DEVELOP ITSELF WITHOUT EDUCATION //
[Thursday, 24 July 2025]

Sinesine Yongolmugl MP Kerenga Kua said Papua New Guinea is a developing nation, and in order to claim itself amongst the developed nations of the world then, we must educate our people by starting with our children in the primary schools.

Mr Kua said this during the dual opening of a new six in one classroom building and a new school library at the Dinima Primary School yesterday.

He said education plays a crucial role in various aspects of national development, including economic growth, social development, political stability, human capital development, and sustainability.

"Since I became your member in 2012, I have made sure that the biggest share in the annual government grant goes to education in the district. Education is always my priority, and under my leadership, we will continue to support," he said.

He said each primary school in the district received K96 000 last year, amongst the high schools, one secondary, and the Kundiawa teachers college.

He said the opening of the six in one building and library symbolizes the dedication and commitment put to work.

" Dinima is the first primary school amongst others that received funding under district grant last year, and i hope and expect more of such in other primary schools," Kua said.

Nanis Mark, the head master of Dinima primary, thanked SSY district for their continuous support.

He said Dinima, with its feeder elementary school, so far received K350, 000 for the last 3 years from the district.

He said this support has fueled their aspirations and empowered them to reach for greater height.

" I also want to thank the Queenpads Products Limited, Benchmark Coffee Traders, and Mauberema Ecotourism Conservation for their vital donation of full library kits and books", he said.

Mr. Mark said that for 48 long years, one vital resource remained an elusive dream, a dedicated school library, and today that dream once a whispered hope now stands before them as a vibrant reality.

" This is not merely a building, but it's a gateway to boundless knowledge, a sanctuary for discovery and a cornerstone for the intellectual development of our children," he said.
