On Thursday in Baindoang, I officially handed over the body of our late Governor, Hon. Luther Akisawa Wenge, to his family and people β the place where he would return to rest among his ancestors. It was my solemn duty, as Chief Mourner, to hand over his casket to his tribesmen in the presence of his family, friends, colleagues, and the people of Morobe who gathered to pay their final respects.
Yesterday, we laid him to rest.
The late Governor was more than just a leader; he was a man of deep conviction, guided by faith, shaped by humble beginnings, and driven by an unshakeable belief in justice and equality. Born to a missionary family whose father travelled throughout Morobe spreading the Lutheran faith, Our Songang grew up with values of service, humility, and perseverance that remained the foundation of his life.
From his early days at Dregerhafen High School, where he served as school captain, to his years at the University of Papua New Guinea Law School, he showed exceptional leadership and discipline. His legal journey took him to the National Court Bench, where he served as a judge before entering politics β a testament to his deep respect for law, justice, and the Constitution of Papua New Guinea.
In politics, as Governor, Our Songang stood out as a fearless and visionary leader. Guided by his Lutheran faith, which teaches one to stand up for justice, he was never afraid to speak truth to power, often challenging decisions he believed undermined the Constitution or disadvantaged ordinary Papua New Guineans. His leadership style was bold and at times unconventional, but always rooted in his deep faith and moral conviction.
The late Governor was a staunch defender of the Papua New Guinea Constitution, a voice for fairness, and a tireless advocate for the rule of law. His unwavering commitment to his Lutheran faith shaped not only his character but also his approach to governance β one grounded in service, compassion, and equality before God and the law.
His policies and priorities reflected his rural upbringing. He championed universal education, rural health, and the empowerment of ordinary Papua New Guineans β especially the people of Morobe. Our Songang believed that development must reach the most remote corners of our country, and he dedicated his life to making that vision a reality.
As we bid farewell to a giant of Morobe politics and a son of Papua New Guinea, I want to sincerely thank the people of Nabak and Nawaeb District for allowing him to serve with such dignity, courage, and faith. His passing leaves a great void, but his legacy will continue to inspire us all.
On behalf of the Government and the people of Papua New Guinea, I extend my deepest condolences to his family, his people, and the entire Morobe Province. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
Farewell, my Kandre, my Governor, Papa, Uncle, Brother β Son of Morobe, Son of Papua New Guinea.
Hon John Rosso, Cheif Mourner
Deputy Prime Minister
