KBC PRINCIPAL THANKS MADANG GOVERNOR FOR FINANCIAL SUPPORT.
A POPULAR figure in the education sector in Kokopo District of East New Britain Province, and a long-serving principal at the Kokopo Business College (KBC), John Karis, has heaped praises on the Governor for Madang Province, Hon. Ramsey Pariwa, upon receiving a cheque payment from the Madang Provincial Government worth K67,484, which he described as ‘a very timely financial assistance’ to the college last Friday, May 30, 2026.
Although, the Governor of Madang, Hon. Ramsey Pariwa, could not make it to Kokopo due to the National Parliament Sitting, he was represented by his First Secretary, Francis Tavatuna, and the Coordinator of the Sir Peter Barter Education Scholarship Program, Janice Poe, who delivered the cheque to Mr. Karis in the presence of the Madang students and staff at the Kokopo Business College.
Mr. Karis explained that the payment by the MPG came in very timely because it would allow for the students to be issued permit to sit in for their examinations which commences this week.
“I must admit your coming is very timely because as students prepare for the exams many of them were very anxious and uncertain as to how they would sit for the exams due to their outstanding fees, and without a permit they would not sit in for the exams,” he explained.
“Your coming today is a huge relief and I must, on behalf of the students and even their parents, thank the Governor for Madang, Hon. Ramsey Pariwa, wholeheartedly,” he further stated.
Last week a team from the Madang Governor’s Office comprising the First Secretary and the Sir Peter Barter Barter Education Scholarship Coordinator visited Kokopo Business College and other tertiary institutions in East New Britain to deliver the financial assistance to cover 50 per cent of the tuition fees for Madang students.
Mr. Karis who hails from East Sepik Province, but has served at KBC for over twenty years did not hesitate to mention that since his time at the college he had not witnessed any provincial governments, nor any private institutions arriving to pay a big amount of school fee assistance at the college.
“I must take my hat off to the Governor for Madang, Hon. Ramsey Pariwa, for coming up with this wonderful and important initiative to develop the human resource for his province,” Mr. Karis stated.
“What the Madang Provincial Government is doing under the leadership of Governor Pariwa is the first of its kind at Kokopo Business College and we are so grateful,” he added.
Mr. Karis challenged that Madang students that the school fee assistance by the Madang Provincial Government is ‘not free gift’ and urge them to remember to go back home and do something worthwhile for their community, family and Madang province generally.
“It doesn’t necessarily mean that the financial assistance you have received is a free-gift, so you can go out to anywhere to work to develop other provinces. You must return back to Madang and give back to your province,” Mr. Karis stated.
The Principal was impressed upon learning that the Madang Governor Mr. Pariwa has already invested K5 million in the National Development Bank to support SME development in the province, of which K1 million is for youth SME.
“I encourage that when you go back for your holidays you must make use of what you’ve learnt in theory here at KBC by applying for a SME to do practical work in your respective communities in Madang,” Mr. Karis stated.
Mr. Tavatuna in his address to the students stated that Governor Pariwa is passionate about the future human resource of Madang Province therefore, since he took office he has given education as one of his major priorities and has initiated the Sir Peter Barter Tertiary Education Scholarship Program.
He further clarified that the Madang Provincial Government has this year invested K10 million in supporting the Sir Peter Barter Tertiary Education Scholarship Program.
He said the financial assistance to Kokopo Business College is the second batch of payment from a K3 million allocated under the PSIP 2026 Education component for the program. The first batch of payment of over K3.3 million was already to various institutions throughout the country to assist pay tuition fees for Madang students.
The scholarship Coordinator, Ms. Poe, during the visit to Kokopo Business College also took time to explain to the students who have not applied to the scholarship program to make it their business next time to visit the Madang Provincial Government to collect applications forms and fill all the necessary requirements to benefit from the program.
She said the opening date for application for next year’s scholarship is December 1, 2026.
Ms. Poe encouraged that the students who missed out this year must visit the Governor's office during their holidays to obtain application forms.
The Madang students and staff at the Kokopo Business College were emotionally happy and proud to see faces from Madang paying a visit to their school and rushed to meet, greet and share stories and embraced.
“Your coming to KBC is indeed a blessing. It has definitely brought us relief and comfort. It’s like you’re bringing Panu to us in Radazz,” a Madang student at Kokopo Business College remarked excitedly.
