Welcomes Opposition's Supreme Court VONC Court Challenge Tomorrow
Media Statement | Sun. April 26, 2026
Prime Minister Marape Welcomes Democratic Challenge, Urges Voters To Judge Fairly
Papua New Guineaโs democracy remains strong, vibrant, and open to lawful challenge. The latest political moves by the Opposition are not new to this Government, and we welcome the exercise of their democratic rights under our Constitution.
Since 2019, when I first became Prime Minister, our Government has faced numerous court references, political contests, and votes of no confidence. We have already faced eight such motions, with two taken to the floor of Parliament and decisively defeated by strong margins.
This demonstrates one thing clearly: Papua New Guineaโs democracy is alive and functioning.
The courts remain the proper place for constitutional interpretation, and Parliament remains the proper place for political contest. We respect both institutions fully and will await the judiciaryโs decision with confidence and respect.
I also remind our people that the next National Election is now only 12 months away. Ultimately, the greatest power in our democracy does not rest in courtrooms or political commentaryโit rests in the hands of our citizens through the ballot box.
I encourage every Papua New Guinean to vote purposely and wisely.
Do not vote along tribal lines. Do not vote for short-term handouts. Vote based on leadership, policies, track records, integrity, and the future you want for our country.
Judge the current Government fairly on what we have delivered in jobs, education, health, infrastructure, and economic recovery. Equally, judge those seeking to replace us by the alternative policies they present.
Democracy is not about noise aloneโit is about ideas, preparation, leadership, and the trust of the people.
As Leader of PANGU Pati, I welcome competition. Strong competition strengthens democracy. I encourage all political parties to organise, modernise, and present clear alternatives to the people.
When election time comes, the people will decide whether to renew the current mandate or refresh it with new leadership.
That is democracy, and Papua New Guinea has every reason to be proud of it.
