Sago and Fish from Baimuru

Baimuru, my father’s village in Gulf Province, is a place where tradition, food, and craftsmanship come together to tell stories of heritage. Among the many treasures of the land and rivers, sago and fish stand out as the heart of daily life.

Sago, harvested from the sago palm, is the staple food for the people of Gulf. It is carefully prepared, dried, and stored, often carried and preserved in woven baskets called Akeke. These traditional baskets are skillfully made from natural materials, not only serving as food containers but also as cultural symbols of resourcefulness and identity.

Alongside sago, fish caught from the rivers and swamps provide the protein and flavor that complete every meal. Smoked fish, in particular, carries the rich aroma of woodfire, preserving both taste and tradition.

Together, sago, fish, and Akeke baskets represent more than just food. They embody family, sharing, and cultural pride. Each meal and each woven basket tells a story of survival, resilience, and the connection between people and their land.

Bringing these from Baimuru reminds me of where I come from and the values passed down through generations simplicity, respect, and the strength of tradition.
