KUMUL SONS – Meaning & Symbolism

“Kumul”

Kumul is the Tok Pisin word for the Bird of Paradise, which is the national bird of Papua New Guinea.

It is a symbol of freedom, identity, and pride.

The Kumul appears on the national flag, in traditional headdresses, and is a national rugby icon, famously used in the name of the PNG Kumuls (national rugby league team).

In this context, Kumul represents Papua New Guinea itself — its people, culture, and spirit.

“Sons”

The word Sons speaks of heritage, legacy, and belonging.

It reflects the idea of a generation of warriors or representatives who carry forward the name, strength, and pride of the nation.

It connects directly to the national anthem, which begins with:
