WILLIAM DUMA: THE MAN THEY ACCUSE, BUT NEVER DEFEAT
William Duma isn't your average PNG politician. People love to call him corrupt, say they don't trust him, throw around wild accusations left and right. But look at the facts this guy is a straight-up beast in the courtroom and in politics. He's smashed through legal battles that would crush most people, coming out on top every damn time. While others get dragged down by scandals, Duma just keeps winning and running s**t.
First off, Do you know that he made history as the first Pacific leader to take on a major Australian newspaper in Australia's Federal Court the highest court in one of the cleanest, least corrupt countries on the planet and he didn't just win once, he won twice against the same big media giant.
the "Brisbane Property" case around 2021, they falsely claimed he owned some fancy house in Brisbane to paint him dirty. Result? The newspaper folded, paid him an undisclosed fat compensation sum, and covered his legal costs of A$265,901. No apology tour needed he got paid and walked away stronger..
Then there was the massive defamation win in 2023: The Australian Financial Review got hit hard again for defamatory articles implying corruption in oil deals. Court ordered them to pay him AUD$545,000 (that's about K1.3 million) plus costs. Twice they tried to drag his name through the mud in Australia's top courts, twice they lost big time and paid up. That's savagebeating one of the world's toughest legal systems not once, but twice.
Back home, the Manumanu Land Inquiry (2017-2020) tried to nail him over a K46.6 million land deal. Three separate investigations cleared him completely no wrongdoing found. Police dropped their probe too. Allegations flew, but zero stuck.
Election after election, challengers come gunning for his Hagen Open seat, thinking they can flip it with petitions. 2002, 2007, 2012—all those legal challenges got dismissed or failed hard. He kept his seat solid. In 2022, another election petition hit with seven grounds. National Court threw out six as incompetent trash, and the one left didn't overturn s**t. He won again, retained his seat, and kept dominating.
Even in 2025, some former PNG Power board chairman tried suing over Duma firing him as minister. National Court shut it down quick ruled Duma acted 100% legally within his powers. Untouchable.
People talk endless crap about corruption, bribes, shady deals. But time after time, courts both in PNG and Australia's elite system rule in his favor, clear his name, award him cash, and let him keep running the show as a key minister and party leader.
