Papua New Guinea is planning to establish its diplomatic posts in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Kingdom of Tonga, and the Republic of Vanuatu, as part of the country’s growing engagement with Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia, Prime Minister James Marape made the announcement today.

Speaking during a press conference today at APEC Haus in Port Moresby amidst the inaugural Melanesian Ocean Summit 2026, Prime Minister Marape said Papua New Guinea was stepping up its regional leadership role as one of the Pacific’s largest economies and landowners.

“We will make sure we remain as a bloc, as one family, one people of the South Seas going forward,” Prime Minister Marape stated in a statement.

The Prime Minister announced that PNG would establish an embassy in the Marshall Islands to strengthen ties with Micronesian nations, while a new mission in Nukuʻalofa, Tonga, would support PNG’s engagement with Polynesia. PNG will also open an embassy in Vanuatu to complete its diplomatic presence across all Melanesian countries.

“Marshall Islands will host our mission for Micronesia. Tonga will host our mission for Polynesia. Vanuatu completes our Melanesian presence,” the Prime Minister said.

Prime Minister Marape said the move reflected PNG’s commitment to deeper Pacific solidarity and shared economic growth, particularly through cooperation in fisheries, marine resource development, and ocean sustainability.

He said PNG was already working closely with smaller Pacific island nations to help develop sustainable fisheries industries and processing opportunities.

“We want to make sure our fish resources of the Pacific are properly harvested in a sustainable manner and value-added properly, with more return passed back to our Pacific Island fish owners, including ourselves and the nations of the Pacific,” Prime Minister Marape said.

Prime Minister James Marape has called for stronger partnerships with major Chinese energy companies as part of Papua New Guinea’s long term transition toward clean energy and electric transportation.
During the final day of his official visit to Shenzhen, Prime Minister Marape met with executives from Shenzhen Energy and BYD to discuss investment opportunities in renewable energy, battery technology, and electric vehicle manufacturing.
The PM said Papua New Guinea has the natural resources needed to become a major clean energy producer in the region.
“We offer clean energy opportunities that can help promote energy security for Papua New Guinea, China, and the wider world,” PM Marape said.
At Shenzhen Energy, the PM explored technologies used in renewable power generation and proposed future collaboration using PNG’s hydro, solar, and geothermal resources. He also floated the idea of developing battery storage systems capable of exporting clean energy solutions internationally.
During discussions with BYD, one of the world’s leading electric vehicle manufacturers, Marape proposed positioning Papua New Guinea as both an energy supplier and a potential manufacturing base for electric vehicles.

Channel 9’s recent portrayal of Port Moresby as unsafe for PNG Chiefs NRL players is a glaring example of biased and irresponsible journalism. The network ignores a fundamental truth violent crime exists everywhere, including in their own backyard. Bondi Beach, an internationally celebrated Sydney icon, has witnessed repeated public gun shootings incidents that would cause global outcry if they occurred in Port Moresby. Yet, Channel 9 fails to label Bondi as “unsafe” or suggest that Sydney players should be relocated.

The contrast is damning. In Port Moresby, Ela Beach a popular public space does not see public gun shootings. Families gather, children play, and community life thrives without the firearm violence that has plagued parts of Sydney. Channel 9’s narrative selectively amplifies fear about PNG while conveniently downplaying or ignoring similar, if not worse, dangers in Australia.
This double standard is not just unfair, it is damaging. It undermines Papua New Guinea’s reputation, disrespects its people, and spreads unfounded fear among NRL players and fans. If Channel 9 is committed to truth, it must apply the same safety scrutiny to Sydney’s beaches as it does to Port Moresby’s. Until then, their reporting remains exposed as biased fearmongering, not factual journalism.

Elon Musk announced via his official X profile that Starlink is now operational in Papua New Guinea, marking a significant connectivity milestone for the Pacific nation.
In a brief post, Musk confirmed the satellite internet service is “live,” aiming to bridge the digital divide across the country’s rugged terrain and remote islands, where traditional infrastructure has long been challenging to deploy.

The development offers potential benefits for healthcare, education, and disaster response in underserved regions. However, Starlink’s entry also raises questions for local telecom providers regarding market competition and regulatory alignment.
With this rollout, Papua New Guinea joins a growing list of nations leveraging low-Earth orbit technology to expand internet access. Musk’s confirmation underscores his continued push to connect unserved populations globally, though operational details and pricing for local users remain pending.

Papua New Guinea eyes more value from minerals as Marape backs downstream push, despite Ramu mine concerns
Papua New Guinea is pushing to earn more from its mineral wealth by processing resources at home instead of exporting them in raw form.
Prime Minister James Marape has welcomed plans by China Minmetals Corporation, the parent company of Ramu Nickel operator Ramu NiCo Management Ltd, to expand downstream processing in Papua New Guinea.

The proposal is linked to the Ramu Nickel-Cobalt Project in Madang Province, one of the country’s largest mining operations and a key source of foreign investment and export revenue.

Marape’s support reflects the government’s broader push to build local industry, create jobs and capture more value from the resource sector before minerals leave the country.

But the project has also faced long-running controversy, including concerns from communities and activists over environmental impacts, waste disposal, landowner grievances and the distribution of benefits from the mine.
The debate over Ramu Nickel has often highlighted the gap between large-scale resource development and the experience of people living around the project area, with critics calling for stronger safeguards, accountability and community consultation.
Talks on the downstream expansion are still underway, and the real test will be whether the plans translate into genuine investment, local factories and long-term jobs for Papua New Guinea.
