PAPUA New Guinea’s National Rugby League team will be officially called the PNG Chiefs, Prime Minister James Marape revealed on Sunday.

Marape said the name was a powerful reflection of the country’s deep cultural roots, ancient governance systems, and enduring unity.
“We are a nation of a thousand tribes,” Marape said.

“Before there was a modern state called Papua New Guinea in 1975, our people lived for thousands of years under tribal structures led by chiefs — both men and women — who governed, protected, and held our communities together.”

LUTHER Akisawa Wenge’s story cannot be told on its own.

It must be interwoven into the fabric of Morobe society, into the spiritual life of the Evangelical Lutheran Church where he was affectionately known as Songán (preacher); into the legal, political and administrative arrangements of the Morobe Provincial Government which he led as governor across four terms; into the fights for dignity and human rights of the people of Papua New Guinea which he championed in landmark supreme court cases; and into the social and cultural fabric of the Mundung tribe of Nabak in the Nawae district that he was a proud member of.

FIFTY years ago, as a young public servant working at a Konedobu government office, Zacchaeus Posanei celebrated Independence at the Sir Hubert Stadium.

Fifty years later, now a retiree, the Manus grandfather living in Lae’s Papuan Compound made sure to return to Port Moresby to celebrate the golden jubilee of indepencece - this time at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Waigani.

He made sure that a son paid for his trip to Port Moresby, he confessed with a sheepish grin.

AS Papua New Guinea celebrates its 50th independence anniversary, the nation is reminded of its rich history and cultural heritage.

Among the many significant landmarks that dot the country’s landscape, one stands out for its historical and national importance - Motupore Island, owned by the University of Papua New Guinea.

This island, nestled in the heart of the South Pacific Ocean, is not only a haven for scientific research and academic learning but also a treasure trove of Papua New Guinea’s history.

MANY individuals and groups contributed to Papua New Guinea’s progress towards Independence but one group, interpreters or tunimtoks, deserve special mention.

They translated or ‘turned’ the Governments’ information from Tok Pisin into the local language and vice versa.

With 840 different languages in Papua New Guinea – more than any other country in the world - tanimtoks employed by the Australian Administration played a strategic role in almost every area of development and in every stage of Papua New Guinea’s development, from ‘first contact’ to Independence and beyond.

FROM the village of Kono in New Ireland to the halls of international academia, David Linge’s story is one of deep roots, remarkable intellect and quiet revolution.

For a number of reasons, it would certainly be reasonable to give his story a prominent place and space in our national narrative.

First, he can claim the honour of being the first Papua New Guinean to obtain a PhD after receiving his doctorate.

Second, he has humbly served this nation as a teacher and lecturer, a doctor and clinical specialist, and a mentor for over four decades.

TUAM Island is among the Siassi Group with others like larger Umboi, Saka and Malai in the Vitiaz Stait archipelago.

These islands are sitting upon coral rock formations of volcanic origins with rugged terrain and tropical rainforests. The group is strategically located between the mainland of Papua New Guinea and New Britain, with the surrounding seas supporting rich marine life with endless corals and fisheries.

This group of islands are located close to a biologically sensitive international shipping route along the Vitiaz Strait.

THE 2025 NRL season is done and dusted, and for many rugby league fans across Papua New Guinea, there’s a collective sigh of relief - and celebration.

After 19 long years, the Brisbane Broncos have finally reclaimed the elusive Provan-Summons Trophy. The trophy will spend the next few months proudly displayed in the Queensland capital - but perhaps, just perhaps, there’s room for it to make a brief appearance across the Coral Sea, to Port Moresby.

PAPUA New Guinea has one of the highest rates of gender-based violence (GBV) in the world.

Women across the country face physical, s*xual, and emotional abuse at alarming levels, affecting their health, safety, and ability to participate fully in society. Violence against women is widespread, cutting across all ages, regions, and social groups. It leaves deep scars, not just on the body, but on the mind, families, and communities.

The Papua New Guinea Demographic and Health Survey 2016-2018 (DHS 2016–2018) reveals the scale of the crisis. According to the survey, more than half of women aged 15–49 (56%) have been beaten since they were teenagers. Almost one in three women (28%) have been forced into s*x.
