A MEDICAL programme delivered with assistance from the Australian Defence Force and the New Zealand Defence Force will provides valuable training for medical staff and support teams of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force, a senior officer says.

PNGDF chief personnel Col Rodney Yahamani said the Medical Civic Action Programme sharpens soldiers’ skills, readiness and strengthens coordination with civilian health agencies.

"When the PNGDF works closely with the provincial health authorities, district clinics and community volunteers, we become more effective not only during exercises, but during real emergencies, whether during natural disasters, disease outbreaks or during humanitarian crisis," he said.

SMALL-SCALE miners in Papua New Guinea have the potential to become billionaires if they make sound investment decisions, diversify into other businesses, and manage their earnings responsibly, an official says.

Mineral Resources Authority (MRA) managing director Jerry Garry was in Wau last week for the 15th anniversary of celebrations of MRA’s small-scale mining training center.

Garry shared a story about Placer Dome, one of the world’s largest gold mining companies, which began its operation mining alluvial gold in Wau.

THE Papua New Guinea women’s development (Under-20) team has exited the MSG Prime Minister’s Cup tournament following a 2-0 defeat to the Solomon Islands on Saturday at the Sir John Guise Stadium, Port Moresby.

Both sides fielded youthful squads with comparable tactical understanding, but Solomon Islands had the edge through experienced captain Ileen Pegi, whose leadership proved decisive in guiding her team into the next round.

The first half saw relentless pressure from the Solomons, forcing PNG into a defensive posture with lone striker Malinu Raminai isolated up front. Despite the lack of attacking support, PNG goalkeeper Emeliah Toks held firm, making several crucial saves to keep the scores level.

PAPUA New Guinea’s national women’s cricket team, the Lewas, delivered a solid performance to defeat Namibia by six wickets in the Women’s T20I Quadrangular Series in Thailand on Saturday.

After winning the toss, PNG’s bowlers took control early, reducing Namibia to 2 for 0 and maintaining relentless pressure throughout the innings. Namibia were eventually bowled out for 74 in 19.4 overs, struggling to build any momentum against a disciplined Lewas attack.

Mairi Tom led the charge with a superb spell, claiming 2 wickets for just 8 runs in 3.4 overs. Isabel Toua supported brilliantly, taking 2 for 12 in her full four-over quota. Pauke Siaka (2/13), D**e Lohia (2/14), and Henao Thomas (1/19) chipped in with key breakthroughs, while Geua Tom kept things tight, conceding only 7 runs from her two overs.
