ON July 11, 2025, Janet Philemon closed her office door at the Papua New Guinea Red Cross for the last time. It marked the end of a 32-year journey through some of the toughest times in PNG Red Cross Society’s history, during which she helped change the way the organisation provides humanitarian services in the country.

Now at 77, Janet’s retirement comes at the invitation of her grandchildren in Australia, who convinced her it was time to step down from active service after more than three decades of dedication to providing humanitarian services in Papua New Guinea.

PORT Moresby Show used to feature a ‘battle of the bands.’ (Yes, there had been a Port Moresby Show in the decades after independence.)

At one such battle, it came down to a contest between two of city’s biggest names then, the Bluff Inn Souls and Gwadu Band. In the end, Gwadu’s rendition of a Guitar boogie (guitar work) and Wipe out (drums piece) won the battle. The winning drummer was Billy Aisi .

Billy started following the original Gwadu Band wherever they played, led by his father Aisi Kone, originally from Delena in Bereina who got married to a Hanuabada woman and settled there.

IN a bold step towards global climate leadership, Papua New Guinea has secured a landmark US$63.4 million (K264 million) from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) — a transformative investment that puts people and forests at the heart of the country’s climate future.

Announced during the 42nd GCF Board Meeting, hosted for the first time in the Pacific in Port Moresby, the funding represents a historic milestone for PNG. It marks the country’s first-ever single-country project approved under the REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) framework — a UN-backed initiative that rewards forested developing countries for conserving trees and ecosystems while promoting sustainable development.

WHEN we hear the word “grooming,” many people in Papua New Guinea think of brushing hair or dressing well. But online grooming is something very different and very dangerous.

Online grooming is when someone, usually an adult, uses the internet or a phone to build a relationship with a child or teenager. The goal is to gain the child’s trust and later abuse or exploit them, either emotionally, sexually, or financially.

SUNE, then known as Noketep, belonged to the Faiwol cultural group from around Olsobip but fled north to Telefomin with an uncle, Tablaninat, after his father had been killed in a tribal fight.

He was ‘adopted’ by Nilak, one of the carriers from the Chimbu area, on the epic Hagen-Sepik patrol of 1938-39. He took Nilak’s father’s name, Sune, and used it for the rest of his ‘new’ life.

THE story of modern Papua New Guinea is carried forth by not so much the international corporations and investors, but by local entrepreneurs—men and women who sacrificed many nights’ sleep and comfort of a fortnightly salary to pursue the calling of start their own businesses.

And over the years, we have seen this story through names such as late Jacob Luke and the Mapai Group of Companies, IPI Group, Kuima Security Service, Pacific Corporate Security, or in technology companies owned and operated by young Papua New Guineans like NiuNet.com. These are heroes that our forefathers wished for when they brought us the independence.

FIRST, you wake up and feel unwell one morning.

You think it is the flu, or influenza. After a day or two, the chest pains start.

You know, something is not right. Then your appetite diminishes. You sleep, but you cannot rest.

So, you go to the clinic, and the nurse runs the stethoscope over the back of your chest. On both sides.
