THE Papua New Guinea Women’s Business Resource Centre (PNGWBRC) will receive direct funding from the Australian government to support programmes up to June 2027, according to executive director Eli Webb.

Webb said this would drive initiatives that strengthened women’s economic participation and leadership in PNG.

“This is a defining moment for PNGWBRC and for women entrepreneurs across Papua New Guinea,” she said.

The achievement was marked by the signing of an agreement in November with Australia’s PNG Women Lead (PNGWL) programme to receive direct funding from the Australian government.

PAPUA New Guinea distance runner Dilu Goiye clocked an outstanding 34 minutes and 21 seconds over the 10km World Cross Country Championship course at the Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida, United States, on Saturday.

Athletics PNG described his achievement as “the benefit of consistent training over an extended period of time”.

Goiye, who had resumed training at Goroka’s National Sports Institute only a week after the Palau Games, was “the most committed to training last year and it was this consistency that earned him selection for the World Cross Country Championships”.

THE Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) says that charging extra fees for cash-back transactions conducted using Eftpos machines is illegal.

ICCC commissioner Roy Daggy said that the Bank South Pacific Financial Group Limited (BSP) and Kina Bank Limited confirmed in a meeting that charging customers for cash-back was illegal and a breach of the merchant agreement that existed between the bank and the merchant.

Daggy said some shops in the urban centres and rural areas had been charging customers fees for cash-back transactions through Eftpos.

HIGH commodity prices, particularly agricultural products, drove demand upwards in PNG’s protein sector last year, according to Zenag Chicken general manager Stanley Leahy.

Leahy said Zenag customers (retailers and wholesalers) did well when PNG grassroot consumers had money in their pockets.

“On the back of strong demand and stable pricing, Zenag experienced double-digit growth last year,” he said.
