September 18, 2025 by NATHAN WOTI
THE United States of America has started the setting up of its K1.6 billion jet fuel storage facility with a ground-breaking ceremony in Papa, Central.
Deputy state secretary Christopher Landau, US Navy Admiral Samuel Paparo and US Ambassador Ann Marie Yastishock attended the ceremony.
The US department of defence has awarded the contract worth around US$400 million (about K1.6 billion) for its construction near the Port Moresby harbour.
Landau said that the construction phase would generate jobs and attract further investment.
โ€œOur common Christian heritage is such an important bond for both countries, and we want to be a good partner for Papua New Guinea,โ€ Landau said.
Paparo said that the ceremony was not just the turning of the soil, but a commitment to the community and to Papua New Guinea.
โ€œTogether, we are building a foundation that will support growth, create opportunities and strengthen the bonds that bring us together,โ€ he said.
โ€œWith this project, we are creating a foundation for a brighter future.
โ€œAs we break ground today, we also look ahead with great anticipation, and we are excited for the opportunities this project will bring and the positive impact it will have for years to come.

Morobe Governor Passes Away

Lae, September 2025 โ€” The people of Morobe Province are mourning the passing of their Governor, whose death was confirmed yesterday. His sudden departure has left a void in both provincial leadership and national politics.

The late Governor was widely respected for his commitment to development in Morobe, particularly in infrastructure, education, and health. Tributes have poured in from leaders across Papua New Guinea, acknowledging his service and dedication to the province.

Flags were flown at half-mast in Lae as residents gathered to honor his legacy. The National Government is expected to announce funeral arrangements and appoint an interim leader in the coming days.

His passing marks the end of a chapter for Morobe, leaving behind both achievements and unfinished plans for the provinceโ€™s future.

Port Moresby, 8 September 2025 โ€” The Sir Hubert Murray Stadium came alive over a spectacular two-day military tattoo hosted by the Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF), marking a crescendo in the nationโ€™s Defence Week celebrations leading up to the 50th anniversary of independence.

The event kicked off on 5 September with a dramatic and memorable opening: parachutists from the Australian Defence Force Parachute School descended into the stadium, setting a high-energy tone for the evening.

Throughout both nights, attendees witnessed a vibrant fusion of music, military precision, and culture. Participating bands and drill teams represented PNG alongside a range of partner nationsโ€”including Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Fiji, India, Japan, Tonga, the United Kingdom, and Vanuatu.

Highlights included:

The combined pipes and drums performances from military units such as the Royal Pacific Islands Regiment, the Royal Australian Regiment, and the Scots Guards.

Cultural showcases from traditional Papuan groups alongside international ensembles like the Fijian Military Forces Band, the US Tropic Lightning Band, and the Tonga Royal Corps of Musicians.

A grand finale featuring all performers in unison, playing Tchaikovskyโ€™s 1812 Overture complete with fireworks that lit up the night sky.

This event was more than a display of martial disciplineโ€”it served as a powerful symbol of unity and cultural exchange. The musical collaboration and the glowing camaraderie among participating nations underscored strong regional and global partnerships as PNG celebrated its golden jubilee.

Popondetta MP Richard Masere Backs Electronic Voting Reforms in Parliament.

Port Moresby, September 2, 2025 โ€” Popondetta Open MP Richard Masere has assured Parliament today that the government is committed to strengthening the countryโ€™s electoral system through the introduction of electronic voting.

Responding to questions raised during the parliamentary session, Mr. Masere, who is also responsible for overseeing electoral matters, announced that his ministry will host a national workshop this week to outline the framework for the electronic voting system. The workshop will also address long-standing administrative and logistical issues within the Electoral Commission.

Mr. Masere highlighted the urgency of electoral reform, noting that nearly 50 percent of the population was unable to cast their votes in the last election due to system flaws, logistical challenges, and poor coordination. He said the new reforms would ensure inclusivity and restore confidence in the electoral process.

โ€œHalf of our people missed their right to vote. This is unacceptable, and it must be fixed. Electronic voting is a step toward ensuring every citizen has equal opportunity to participate in choosing their leaders,โ€ Mr. Masere told Parliament.

He urged fellow parliamentarians to support his ministryโ€™s efforts, emphasizing that reforming the electoral system required bipartisan collaboration.

โ€œOur goal is to deliver a credible, transparent, and accessible voting system. This is not just my ministryโ€™s responsibility but a national task. We must all work together to rebuild trust in our democracy,โ€ he said.

The announcement has been welcomed by some MPs, though others have expressed caution about the challenges of implementing. electronic voting in remote parts of the country.

The upcoming workshop is expected to provide a roadmap for the reforms, with consultations planned for key stake.

POLICEMEN AND POLICE CAR DAMAGED IN DRUAMUGL VILLAGE, KEROWAGI DISTRICT, SIMBU PROVINCE.

Media Statement

A quick response from Simbu Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Mazuc Rubiang and his team resulted in the successful recovery of three police guns, a police vehicle, and three policemen at Druamugl village in Kerowagi District, Simbu Province.

According to PPC Rubiang, the policemen were responding to a dispute that arose between two groups of people regarding where to set up the independence celebration. He stated that the Kerowagi community had agreed on a location, and the District Administrator was on the ground to discuss how they would set up the stage for the celebration when he was attacked. He mentioned that his police officers were attacked while they were trying to assist the DA and his team. The police car was damaged, and three police-issued fi****ms were also stolen during the attack.

"I was advised late yesterday (Sunday, August 31) evening about the incident where myself and a team of police officers quickly went to the scene and removed the damaged vehicle. The three police officers were issued police fi****ms. We are investigating the matter. Some suspects have been identified, and they will be arrested soon, PPC Rubiang said.

He further added that what the people did to the police officers, the guns, and the vehicle is uncalled for. We will investigate the incident, and if it means we need to use excessive force, we will do that to teach those who do not respect the rule of law. He further added that a police team will be deployed to investigate the matter, and if it means to call for additional units, the command will advise accordingly if the suspects who were involved are not brought in for questioning.

PPC Rubiang further added that the investigators will be neutral people, so all parties must help them in the investigation to find out who is wrong.

He said the vehicle and the guns have now been taken
