A Namibian teenager built a phone that needs no SIM or airtime, and his country is sleeping on this talent.
In 2016, a Grade 12 student named Simon Petrus, from the village of Osh*tishaHaihonya in northern Namibia, built a mobile phone that makes calls with no SIM card and no airtime. He built it from scrap, salvaged parts of old televisions and broken phones, in a village where only one vehicle went to town each day. Miss it, and you lost 24 hours before you could get another part. It took him two years. It was funded by his unemployed parents, who scraped together around 147 US dollars, money they did not have, because they believed in their son.
Understand what he actually made. The phone runs on radio frequency, the same principle as two way radios, and works as a communication and network booster for rural areas where the cell signal is weak and airtime is too expensive for ordinary families. It was his answer to a real problem he watched his own community suffer, people cut off from the world because a telecom company decided their village was not worth a strong signal. He also built it into a unit with a radio, a small TV, a light, a fan and a charging socket. One teenager, solving five problems at once, with rubbish other people threw away.
He won first prize at the national science fair. The media celebrated him. Namibians called him the African Tesla. And then the machine of neglect did what it always does. The government praised him and moved on. He struggled even to get into university, finally earning an electronics engineering degree in 2023, seven years later. Today, nearly a decade after his invention stunned the continent, Simon Petrus is unemployed, repairing basic electronics to survive, watching others copy the design he was never helped to patent or build. In his own words, governments say they support young innovators formally, but they never help take the invention to new heights.
This is the real African tragedy, and it is not the one the West likes to tell. Our problem was never a shortage of genius. Our children invent phones out of scrap in villages with no signal. The problem is that the continent keeps producing brilliance and then abandoning it, letting talent starve while importing the very technology our own children already imagined. A boy showed Namibia the future and Namibia handed him a repair bench.
Somewhere in a village right now sits the next Simon Petrus. The only question that matters is whether Africa will build him a laboratory, or leave him another cautionary tale.
