The PNG Correctional Services is strengthening its rehabilitation agenda through targeted vocational training partnerships designed to provide practical skills for inmates, staff, and their dependents.
Under an ongoing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the SME Corporation, the initiative aims to reduce law enforcement challenges and mitigate social issues in Port Moresby by creating productive economic pathways within correctional institutions.
Speaking on behalf of the Correctional Services Deputy Commissioner Corporate Services Bernard Nepo emphasized the role of rehabilitation in restoring individuals to society and curbing urban crime.
"From the Christian perspective, we think that those that are outcasts or coming into our establishment are part of this country," Nepo stated.
"Instead of youth hanging out on the streets, we can reduce law enforcement challenges in cities like Port Moresby by providing these rehabilitation programs. It is benefiting not only the prison community, but staff members, inmates, and their dependents."
The training programs focus on hands-on skills, including garment making, sewing, and screen printing, aimed at helping participants establish micro-enterprises or secure meaningful employment upon completion.
Attending the event, Minister for Commerce and Industry, Wake Goi, MP, commended the collaboration between CS and SME Corp, calling for broader corporate and government partnerships across Papua New Guinea.
"I would like to appreciate the team from SME Corporation, the Board, and the Management," Minister Goi said. "I want to see this department partner with big companies and state institutions across Papua New Guinea. When we build strong institutional networks, we can extend these training programs to reach more communities and transform lives."
By integrating correctional facilities into national economic and small-business development programs, officials hope to reduce repeat offenses and foster long-term community growth. CIS leadership confirmed plans to continue expanding the scope of vocational courses under the SME Corporation partnership in future training cycles.
