SAKARIP LEADS ENGA’S FIRST PILOT WARD DEVELOPMENT PLAN

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), in partnership with the Enga Provincial Government and Sakarip Ward stakeholders, is advancing the province’s first pilot Ward Development Plan in Sakarip Ward 12, Mai LLG, Wabag District.

The initiative took another step forward with a Ward Development Validation Workshop held on August 20, bringing together community leaders, women, youth, churches, persons with disabilities, government representatives and members of the Langap tribe.

Participants reviewed and validated information gathered through a community needs assessment earlier this year, identifying key development priorities, challenges, risks and opportunities facing the Sakarip community.

Enga LLG Director Jorrie Tandapi commended the collaborative approach and reaffirmed the Provincial Government’s commitment to supporting the development and implementation of the pilot plan.

Sakarip Ward Councillor Psalmson Tembeno also thanked IOM and its partners for involving the community, saying local people must have a voice in planning and shaping development in their ward.

Following the validation workshop, IOM conducted a Community Facilitators Training from August 21 to 22. Selected community members were trained to support the next stage of the planning process.

The facilitators will assist with a Community Intensive Training scheduled for August 24 to 28 at Sakarip Village. The week-long exercise will involve further community engagement, data collection, assessment and ward profiling.

IOM Senior Project Associate for Enga, Tony Tambi Jr., urged the community to take ownership of the process, stressing that meaningful local participation would be critical to the success and sustainability of the plan.

Senior Provincial Monitoring Officer with the Department of Provincial and Local Government Affairs, Dorothy Kisau Kukum, thanked IOM for supporting the pilot and involving government agencies.

She said the department would continue supporting the process and use lessons from Sakarip to explore similar ward development planning initiatives in other parts of Enga.

The Sakarip Ward Development Plan is expected to provide a community-led roadmap for local planning, coordination, resource mobilisation and future development interventions.

Lessons from the pilot could also help guide the development of similar ward-level planning approaches across Enga Province.

NEW-LOOK ELISEO PLAZA FLIES EAST NEW BRITAIN FLAG IN PORT MORESBY

East New Britain Governor Michael Marum has welcomed the redevelopment and launch of the new-look Eliseo Plaza at Koke in Port Moresby, describing it as an important milestone for the East New Britain Development Corporation (ENBDC).

Governor Marum congratulated the ENBDC Board and management, the Eliseo Group and all partners involved in transforming the provincial asset into a modern retail outlet.

He said ENBDC remains the property owner, while the Eliseo Group is its development and business partner.

“This is an important milestone for ENBDC and for East New Britain. To see the East New Britain flag flying high again in the nation’s capital is something we should all be proud of,” Mr Marum said.

He said ENBDC was established by past provincial leaders as the business arm of the people of East New Britain but later faced management and business challenges.

“We had to intervene to ensure that this important provincial asset was protected and given an opportunity to recover,” he said.

Governor Marum acknowledged ENBDC chairman Laurie Williams, board directors, State Solicitor Daniel, Elison Pidik, Provincial Administrator Levi Mano and the legal team for their leadership in helping turn the company around.

He also thanked BSP Financial Group’s chairman and chief executive officer for supporting the new board and expressing confidence in ENBDC as it addressed its challenges.

Governor Marum said the partnership with Eliseo Group and other stakeholders demonstrated confidence in the potential of ENBDC.

He also acknowledged NCD Governor Powes Parkop and Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko for supporting ENBDC’s continued presence and contribution in Port Moresby.

“This new-look supermarket will restore confidence in our provincial asset and create a stronger business platform to ensure the East New Britain name continues to be represented with pride in Port Moresby,” he said.

Governor Marum congratulated ENBDC, its board, management and staff, the Eliseo Group and all partners involved in the redevelopment.

“We are proud to see ENBDC moving forward again. The flag of East New Britain is flying high in Port Moresby, and we want to see it remain there for many years to come,” he said.

El Niño Destroys Enga Food Gardens

El Niño conditions are destroying food gardens across parts of Enga Province, leaving rural families increasingly worried about food shortages and calling for urgent government assistance.

A woman from the affected area has appealed to the Government and provincial authorities to provide immediate support as frost and prolonged dry conditions damage crops and threaten household food supplies.

Her concerns come as heavy frost is currently affecting areas around Sirunki, along the Wabag-Lagaip border. Reports indicate that food gardens are being badly affected by the extreme weather conditions.

Communities in Enga and other Highlands provinces are already reporting failing gardens, water shortages and growing concerns over food security as the El Niño weather pattern intensifies.

The woman said affected families needed urgent government assistance before the situation worsens and household food stocks run out.

She is calling on the Government to assess the affected communities and provide food relief, water and other essential assistance to families whose livelihoods depend heavily on subsistence farming.

Report Child Abuse, NOCFS Urges Public

National Office for Child and Family Services (NOCFS) chief executive officer Jerry Wap has urged the public to immediately report all forms of child abuse to authorities instead of simply sharing images and videos on social media.

Mr Wap, who is the country’s chief child protection officer, made the call while condemning two separate incidents of alleged violence against children that recently circulated on Facebook and WhatsApp.

In one incident, a four-year-old girl was allegedly physically assaulted by her stepmother, suffering injuries to her face and right hand.

In another case, a purported domestic dispute between a couple allegedly resulted in a mother stabbing her own child with a kitchen knife while attempting to attack her husband.

Mr Wap said members of the public had a responsibility to report such cases to the police, NOCFS or child protection officers operating at provincial and district levels.

“I call on members of the public and communities to report any and all forms of child abuse to the police, the NOCFS and our child protection officers in the provinces and districts,” he said.

“We all have a duty and responsibility to protect children in this country. Child protection is everybody’s business.”

Mr Wap said people should report directly to the nearest police station, a child protection officer or his office.

He said while sharing images or videos of abuse online could alert authorities, social media posts often lacked important information needed for proper investigations.

Details such as the names of alleged perpetrators, location, date and time of an incident were important to help authorities investigate cases, identify suspects and protect affected children.

Mr Wap also warned social media users and content creators against spreading false information about child abuse.

He urged people not to use artificial intelligence to create images of children for malicious purposes, scams or to increase social media following and engagement.

He said spreading fake or misleading information was unlawful and offenders could face charges under Papua New Guinea’s Cybercrime Act.

Mr Wap said children in PNG were protected under the Lukautim Pikinini Act 2015, the National Child Protection Policy and other relevant laws.

He called for stronger cooperation between parents, communities and authorities to prevent abuse and ensure perpetrators of crimes against children faced the full force of the law.

Ganai Suspended, Maru Acting Secretary

Department of Commerce and Industry Secretary David Ganai has been suspended from office, with Ronald Maru appointed as Acting Secretary for an initial period of three months.

The decision is contained in a National Gazette notice dated August 14, 2026, signed by Governor-General Sir Bob Dadae.

The notice states that Ganai’s appointment as Secretary has been suspended pending the conclusion of investigations.

Maru’s appointment as Acting Secretary took effect from August 5, 2026, and will run for three months or until the investigations are completed, whichever occurs first.

The Governor-General exercised the powers conferred under the Constitution and the Public Services (Management) Act 1995, acting on the advice of the National Executive Council and the recommendation of the National Public Service Commission.

The suspension and appointment come as the department continues to oversee key areas of Papua New Guinea’s commerce and industry development.

The Gazette notice did not disclose details of the investigations or the allegations that led to Ganai’s suspension.

U.S. TO KEEP DISASTER RESPONSE ADVISER IN PNG THROUGH 2027


The United States will place a full-time disaster response adviser in Papua New Guinea through 2027 after PNG and U.S. first responders concluded a four-day joint disaster response field training in Lae on Wednesday.

The adviser will support PNG’s disaster preparedness and response capacity as the country strengthens coordination between civilian, military and international responders.

The training, led by the U.S. Pacific Command’s Center for Excellence in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance, concluded with live tactical demonstrations at Igam Barracks.

The exercise brought together the Papua New Guinea Defence Force, National Disaster Centre, National Maritime Safety Authority, Morobe Provincial Government, Papua New Guinea Red Cross, International Organization for Migration and U.S. military partners.

Responders demonstrated capabilities in oil spill response, search and rescue, medical triage and displaced population management through scenarios based on the province’s critical disaster hazards.

At the Port of Lae, emergency personnel deployed containment booms during a simulated maritime oil spill, while PNGDF and U.S. Army medical teams conducted search and rescue and mass-casualty triage exercises at Igam Barracks.

The IOM and local non-government organisations also established and managed a model displaced persons camp focused on protecting vulnerable populations and maintaining human dignity.

CFE-DM Training and Engagements Branch Chief James Kenwolf said the exercises demonstrated PNG first responders’ ability to take the lead during emergencies.

“The high level of professionalism and seamless coordination demonstrated during these live drills proves that Papua New Guinea's first responders possess the capable, sovereign capacity to lead emergency operations and safeguard their citizens,” Kenwolf said.

The National Disaster Centre plans to replicate the training model across other high-risk provinces, moving disaster preparedness from tabletop planning to practical, province-level response.

U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Andy Covington said the relationships built through the training would strengthen the two countries’ ability to respond together when disaster strikes.

“The United States is proud to serve as Papua New Guinea’s partner of choice, and the deep, professional relationships forged during this training will ensure our countries stand ready to heal and respond together when disaster strikes,” Covington said.

Residents Told to Avoid Fallen Power Lines After Fire Causes Pole Collapse in Madang

PNG Power Limited has warned residents living near Wara Market to avoid fallen or low-hanging power lines after a power pole was forced to the ground by a fire on Wednesday, 19 August 2026.

PNG Power said the pole at Wara Market along Madang Highway was deliberately set on fire and that the damage has affected the Madang and Ramu grid, causing power outages for customers who rely on the line.

“PNG Power is making every effort to restore supply, but regrettably some members of the public have set fire to public property,” the company said.

The company condemned the deliberate damage, noting it affects all users of the line, and urged the public to stop such behaviour.

While restoration work is under way, PNG Power urged members of the public to take safety precautions:

•Stay away from any fallen or low-hanging power lines.
•Switch off major appliances to protect them from power surges when supply is restored.
•Do not touch electrical equipment with wet hands.
•Report hazards such as sparking wires or fires near power infrastructure to emergency services immediately.

PNG Power’s crews are aware of the incident and are working to restore power as quickly as possible.

The company urged clients and the public to remain patient while technical teams on the ground complete repairs.

The company said it will provide updates on progress.
