FIRST EVER NATIONALLY OWNED RETAIL PHARMACY

In a historic milestone for the country, a Papua New Guinean has opened a first-ever nationally owned retail pharmacy - Tali's Pharmacy located at the Unity Mall, in Port Moresby.

Pharmacist Myrtle Piokole, who has been in private practice for over thirteen years saw the need and tapped into the space with her business partner - Dr. Sarah Kiniafa.

Mrs. Piokole says, venturing into this space has not been easy but with great support from her husband, family and partner - they've made it through:

The retail pharmacy which will be competing with other big-name pharmacies is offering usual pharmaceutical services as well as retail.

Mrs. Piokole says the requirements for venturing into a pharmacy set-up are very stringent such as the need for a pharmacist license and approval from the Pharmacy board among others.

Business partner, Dr. Sarah Kiniafa explains that their services similar to the others will include an in-station with a nurse for free general checks and referrals.

Tali's pharmacy which presently gets its products from City Pharmacy to resell is working on its procurement arm for larger medical procurements.

It has sister companies Blue Sky medical and dental services.

“GO TO SCHOOLS AND CHURCHS TO BECOME RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS” DUEA ARINTE
It is good to take the advice of the wise and elderly people in our communities and country if we want to be a successful people or nation.
One senior statesmen and leader from the Eastern Highlands believes many of the social ills faced in our communities today can be solved if we send our youths to school and church.
He is a man born three decades before PNG even got its Independence, he witnessed the arrival of the first Whiteman in his area, worked with them and he also had a part in setting up the foundations of politics in Papa New Guinea.
Despite only reaching elementary level of education, he is a dynamic character of leadership and wisdom to his people.
He was awarded a British Empire medal in the nineteen eighties, March 13,1982 to be exact, by her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the second.
He is Duea Arinte from Onanika village of Gadsup Ward in Obura Wanenara District of the Eastern Highlands Province.
Mr Arinte started serving in leadership roles in 1969 as a councillor and later a village court magistrate. His other more significant roles included being part of founding Pangu Party, PNG’s first Political Party, with Grand Chief Sir Michael T. Somare, and Peoples Party with Sir Julias Chan. His vigorous leadership roles began under the leadership of Sir Barry Holloway who was the member for Kainantu at that time.
He served as a board member for the Eastern Highlands Provincial Lands Board and also as a Director of Tairora Gadsup Development¬¬¬¬ (TAIGA.
Along the way in his different leadership roles, he also managed to work closely with the ‘ didiman ‘ , or agriculture officers and learned some skills which he continues to use today in managing his 73 hectare piece of land.
Mr Arinte who is now 80 years old is a hard worker despite his level of education. “I was 23 years old and I was in Grade 2. I left school after my school teacher announced that I failed my social study subject. I was ashamed as I was a young man attending school”.
He also recalls during his childhood days when some boys had stolen peanuts from a Whiteman farmer’s garden and they had later been belted by the farmer
“We were uncivilised until the colonisers came and they completely changed our lives and standard of living. We became a respectful and law abiding generation. We feared the police and the white man who were missionaries, and teachers”.
A sturdy Arinte said by now most village in PNGA sturdy Arin

TOUGH SEASON FOR LOCAL HONEY PRODUCER
This year has been a tough year for a local honey producer given the prolonged dry spell occurring in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province.
Local honey producer, Helping Hand Honey Producers located west of Goroka Town is experiencing a delay in harvesting season due to the longer dry season.
HHHP Managing Director, Kelly Inae said in the previous years, honey season starts from August through to December but it is not the case this year.
“There has been a great change in the weather pattern this year, making it a real tough season for us to harvest honey during the usual honey season which is around this time”.
He added that because bees feed on nectar source from plants to make honey, the dry season is not helping this normal cycle.
However, an enthusiastic Kelly said despite the tough season and the delay in harvesting for him, he is managing to barely stay afloat from supply from local honey farmers from the other districts.
“Some of my honey farmers from other districts in the province, like Okapa, they are supporting me to continue business”.
Mr Inae conducts training for Honey Bee Keeping for interested locals annually. And this is one reason he is still going during this tough season.
His honey brand, Mountain Honey, is sold in supermarkets in the Western Highlands, Eastern Highlands and he also supplies it to wholesale local markets throughout the country.

BEGINNER HONEY BEE KEEPERS HAPPY WITH KNOWEDGE AQUIRED

More than twenty participants who completed a week long Beginners Honey Bee Keeping Training in Goroka are delighted with the knowledge they have acquired.

The twenty four participants are from different parts of the country, coming from Enga, Western Highlands, Jiwaka, Chimbu, Morobe and various districts from within the Eastern Highlands.

The training was facilitated by Helping Hand Honey Producers. Trainer and Managing Director of HHHP, Kelly Inae said it was a pleasure for him to train more people to grow the honey industry in the country.

“We need more people in the Honey Industry, to make it grow. Honey Industry is still at its infant state in PNG but it is a demanding product in the local market and in the world market”.

He said what he has taught in the five days is to familiarise the participants to get the basic knowledge to master themselves to look after bees.

A participant and spokesperson for the group, Bepi Waninga, expressed gratitude to Mr Inae for sharing his knowledge in the industry with them.

“We have learnt so many new things in the Honey Industry from you in just few days, and now our mind and eyes are open to this wonderful opportunity to be self-sustaining and industrious”.

Guest at the Graduation programme, the Eastern Highlands Province Department of Agriculture and Livestock Director, Bubia Muhuzu, said Honey Bee Industry is still a struggling industry in the country.

“PNG Honey is top in the World Market, but there is no promotion and awareness on it. For it to be exported, about 200 000 tones has to be produced annually”.

Mr Muhuzu applauded Mr Inae for promoting the industry by doing his own production, Mountain Honey and at the same time training honey bee farmers and supporting them with incentives.

Mr Inae conducts two beginner honey Bee training every year and it announced on his personal page.

APO FLORICULTURE MARKET
Women in the Eastern Highlands Province who grow flowers for a living can now have a proper market to sell their flowers.
This is made possible by a few women who have seen the need for it and are taking the lead.
The event committee Secretary Alice Koito, a flower enthusiast herself said the market is big in the province but it has been sleeping for some time.
“There has been no market for some time, flowers have been growing and dying. So now we need to find avenues to create market”
The Goroka Urban Local Level Government (GULLG) in its budget has allocated K5000 to the Women Representative, of which Mrs Koito is and she has committed it to creating this market for the women.
“The K5000, I fired it up on gazebos (tent), flowers and plants seedlings and fertilizers for mothers to use”.
Another K5000 commitment was made by the GULLG during its market opening earlier in the month (9 July).
“We decided to come up with this two day market in Goroka Town because many of our mothers are passionate about caring for flowers and selling them and making it a livelihood”.
Mrs Koita says for now it’s a trial and error thing, and yet to set proper dates for the next market.
“We cannot set up fortnightly as some members have suggested but we will sell once a month or as a pop up market on public holidays or to coincide with major events taking place in town”.
During every market event, the organisers provide a gazebo( tent) and collect a K10 fee per day for individual women and groups that set up .For the start about twenty flower mothers showed up to sell.
The flower ladies who turned up expressed gratitude to the organisers for the initiative.
Aiyaph Awesa, from Kefamo who is a house wife said she has been selling her collection of leaf plants, anthuriums and succulents’ flowers since 2018.
“I usually do my marketing in Town every day to assist my husband to meet the daily needs in the house”.
Another house wife, Theresa Alex who does her usual sales at the Mambu Market since 2016, says the biggest money she make from her sales at one time is when she sells at the annual Goroka Show and she even travels to Lae during the year to sell her flowers there.
“I am happy about this monthly or fortnightly market arrangement by the organisers for simple mothers like me to sell my flowers and plants”.
All the flowers on sale and display are considered to be the latest trending on the flower market both in
